Dru Ayala -> Drake Ayala. Kane Naaktgeboren -> Tate Naaktgeboren Kael Voinovich -> Victor Voinovich Then there’s a CA state champion now Ames High School heavyweight, Daniel “Peanut” Herrera. Then there’s national top 5 Dreshaun Ross with a chance to solidify his spot. And then there’s a slew of lower weights where Iowa is scattered throughout the top 20. The most interesting here might be freshman Dawson Youngblut. In any case, I expect some deep runs by multiple kids, with a couple causing a stir into the semis. BACK TO HUB

After PJ Duke, LaDarion Lockett could very well be the next best wrestler in any weight. Especially with Joe Sealey out of the event. He’s a world champion, a past Super 32 champion, and a big favorite now to do it again. He’ll be joined by a trio of Stillwater teammates, Aydan Thomas, JJ McComas, and Stockton Allen. Of the three, McComas enters with the highest seed and national ranking but Thomas has spent a good part of the last calendar year in the top 10 or even top 5 at 106. Up at 113, he’ll have a chance to prove he belongs there as well. Kody Routledge is the one non-Stillwater wrestler with a solid chance to crash the party.  I think Devon Miller is the best shot at a dark horse performing well. BACK TO HUB

Duke is by most accounts the best wrestler in the country at any weight. He’s a returning Super 32 champion and the favorite to do it again. But he’s not all The Empire State has either. Cam Catrabone is a past medalist who should be right back in the mix again. Chris Crawford competes for Wyoming Seminary but repping NY in the pre-season, he could give them another wrestler on the podium. Braidon Woodward has had his fair share of tough competition th least few months, he could be that upper weight dark horse. BACK TO HUB

They have a couple kids who could contend for it this season, but it would be a bit surprising if so. I think you’d have to say Darius Marines is the leader of the contender pack. With top seed Joe Sealey out at 157, it does open up the bracket a little. Still has some formidable opponents for sure, but that’s true for every bracket here.  If not Marines, perhaps it’s Grayson Fuchs at 113 or Wyatt Lees at 106. These lighter weights have a lot of chaos in them usually so maybe one of these two is the beneficiary.  If you said Justin Gates is one of the best pound for pound from Michigan this weekend, you wouldn’t get much protest from me, however, his weight is an absolute beast at the top so it’s a daunting task ahead. Like Gates, Chinavare is a Great Lakes State hammer but at 132, whooo, better him than me against that field. But, unseeded, he’s a definite live dark horse. BACK TO HUB

The kid is a prodigy of sorts and enters this high school field as a true title contender. Based on the seeds, he’s currently at 16, he’ll run into top seed Jax Forrest in the round of 16. That’s quite possibly my most anticipated match, certainly of that round. A couple other podium contenders from the Show Me State are Porter Matecki and Gavin Linsman. Matecki enters as the 7 seed at 120, while Linsman is 10th at 144.  BACK TO HUB

Within the state’s borders, the top school at this time is Valiant Prep. But they don’t compete during the scholastic season so if you want the top school who does, that’s Sunnyside. The two returning Super 32 medalists are champion Chris Castillo and teammate Kyler Larkin. Castillo comes here with the 2 seed at 120 and Larkin likewise is the 2 seed at 132. Naturally these are the two most likely champions from the state. Beyond them, Sergio Vega, Carlos Stanton, and Dean Anderson are the names to watch. I don’t know enough about the rest of the field to give a real legit dark horse candidate but maybe that’s the little Larkin. BACK TO HUB

In recent years, you saw the last name Blaze, you knew you had a possible champion. But there’s no Joey and there’s no Marcus.  That leaves Omar Ayoub as the sole returning Super 32 medalist. And he will have his hands full attempting to repeat that performance. He does come in as a top 4 seed, so the odds may be ever in his favor. Although Ayoub does have that past placement, it’s actually probably between freshman Grey Burnett of Perrysburg and Ethan Birden of Dublin Coffman with the best chances to come away with the S32 belt. Burnett is top 3 in the country at 106, Birden is the top seed at 165. Following those two is a kid from Wadsworth named Jax Joy worth your attention. He’s been impressive every time I’ve seen him. Hard to call Javaan Yarbrough a dark horse but that’s what the Copley state champion is, coming in without even a top 20 seed. BACK TO HUB

A returning finalist in Seth Mendoza. And Davino’s teammate, Dom Munaretto, who has a 6th place finish to his credit. All 3 should be right back where they were, and in the case of Mendoza and Munaretto, maybe improving on their position. As for the rest of the state kids, I’m intrigued by Rocco Hayes and Nick Garcia to see if they’re ready to make leaps this season. Interestingly enough, Hayes isn’t even the only Illinois 106 named Rocco. Cassioppi has been doing extremely well this Summer season and might be poised for a run here. 106 is deep with 6 of the top 7 in the bracket. I’ll have a more in-depth preview for the state later.   BACK TO HUB
