There’s a lot of green going on here, and there’s a lot more green around the rest of the Garden State wrestling community, green with envy that is. I get it, they recruit, they select the best kids, yada yada enchilada or however that goes. I just care about quality competition and that’s what we get here. Not only do these schools come into the finals as the top two in the state, they’re both in the top 10 in the country. St Joe’s #8, Delbarton #9. Each team has a handful of nationally ranked kids. According to the best ranking service in the country (that’s me by the way), Delbarton has 4 and St Joe’s has 3. And although they don’t all line up to meet each other, we will get at least one phenomenal match up here, at 175. A returning state champion (Cerchio) and the 3rd place wrestler from the same bracket (Burton). Already with one head to head win this season, Burton has displayed some big jumps from last year. To the point that he’s the #1 in the state, #3 in the country, and favorite to win this main event. Cerchio of course is himself in the top 10 nationally and could flip that result. In fact, he’s already done that against another ranked foe, Dom Federici. Losing at Hall of Fame duals to the Blue Knight, he would come back and win at Powerade a week later. Perhaps he does the same here. It would go a long way to shifting the tide in this dual as SJR is definitely counting on this one in their favor. Setting aside the thriller at 175, this dual has all the makings of an instant classic. I have SJR favored in 8 matches but with Delbarton likely to pick up more total bonus. This means it’ll come down to the wire, maybe they start at 190 so they can end with the classic 175. Before getting into this year’s version, we have to remember that SJR did get the win last year. They were aided by two massive results, both upsets, both very different in nature but both combining for 9 points but also equalling a 16 point swing. Chase Quenalt was beating James Sloan 10-0 when Sloan caught him and got the win by fall. What looked like a Delbarton major turned into an SJR pin. That’s a 10 point swing. Then the biggest upset was when Mateo Sgambellone pulled out the 3-1 win in Sudden Victory over returning state champ Tyler Vazquez (who would go on to win another later last season) and for this one moment, it was everything SJR needed to get that state crown. This year, no matter who you think is favored coming in, it’s even closer on paper than last year. And that’s why I say we are in for perhaps the best dual of the season. Especially considering the stakes, the full line ups, and talent throughout. So 106 should give us two very likely NJ state medalists. Sontz has been having a great freshman season where he climbed up into the national top 3. Esposito has some solid wins, both in state and out, but nothing on par with Sontz. His best performance was a 1-0 loss to Shamus Regan. That’s the best opponent on his schedule and shows he could definitely keep this competitive. I think it’s Sontz by decision coming off the loss to Killian Coluccio. 113 is definitely a favorite for the Green Knights. McGinty has spent time a little higher in my national hierarchy. I believe he even started the preseason in the top 25 but he’s fallen a little bit, just outside of it. By season’s end who knows. He finished 5th in the state last season and definitely is expected to win this one. To date, Terranova’s best performance was a 6-5 loss to Mike Batista in the Blair dual. Batista is in my top 20 and that was a solid performance for the freshman. I actually think Terranova would have a better chance against Esposito. Maybe Delbarton flips them.  120 is a sizeable favorite for Delbarton. Jones is a likely finalist opposite Anthony Knox and as long as it isn’t Knox on the other side, in the state of New Jersey, I’m picking him to win. Bautista’s job as the match wears on will be to keep it to 3 points for the Green

It’s only right they would meet in the finals. Diving deep into this sport on a national level you come to discover a few truths: Pennsylvania is the best state for individual talent. You can just count up the ranked wrestlers. And then look at NCAA all-americans, champions, etc. Pennsylvania doesn’t usually have nationally strong teams when compared to some other states. #1 seems universally accepted. #2 is a little lesser known. But it’s true. I have 49 Pennsylvania wrestlers ranked nationally. They compete on 32 different teams. Compare that ratio to say, California. I have 36 wrestlers ranked from the Golden State. They compete on 16 different teams. The point being, the distribution of talent in PA seems to be wider, more dispersed, where other states seem to have talent more concentrated to a few power programs. But that has changed. This year, PA has two teams that can compete with almost every top school in the country. Two teams that do have a collection of ranked talent that should break the state team record for points in Hershey next month and two teams that should give us a classic dual tomorrow. I don’t know how significant dual championships are for the teams involved, but I would think each side will want to win this one pretty badly. Does that mean we get some good dual strategy to match some good dual wrestling? We can only hope. (As an aside, that’s maybe the 3rd thing you come to realize, there is a lot left on the table – a lot to be desired – with a lot of dual strategy.) As far as I can tell, McCort will be without a wrestler at the lower weights. Which lower weight that ends up being, I’m not sure. But what I would recommend is that they line up the forfeit with Joey Bachmann. Bachmann would be favored to win, probably by fall, so that’s 6 points for FCA regardless. Better to give them up in a forfeit and then see if Britt can win what amounts to a toss up. If he can, that’s a net 3 for FCA between 107 and 114. If the forfeit goes to Waltenbaugh, and then Bachmann gets the fall, that’s a net 12 for FCA. Those 9 points – in a dual this tough – would turn the outcome. So there’s every possibility McCort wins this dual, but not if they give up 12 points in the first two weights. They’ll need to win the toss and then choose odd or even matches based on where they begin – thus forcing FCA to declare first at 107. Moving on to the rest of the weights, there shouldn’t be any more forfeits, but there will be what feels like two duals. Especially if they start at 127 or 171.  I have both schools favored to win 6 matches. And they happen to be 6 in a row for each side. So if the outcomes live up to the prediction, both teams will go on runs that might feel neverending. Now, where things get interesting is that FCA is probably the biggest favorite in 3, they should get 17 or 18 points there. These three are well known. Jax, Mason, Bo. But the other 3 are all likely to be decisions with Miller, the Super 32 champ, having the strongest odds. The other 2, Herring and Magro, are essentially coin flips. I have Herring and Magro either ranked, or they have spent more time ranked this season than their projected opponent, and get the edge from me. However, these could go either way – but McCort needs them. And if they get them, Magro will cap off a 6 match win streak and the Crushers will have a lead opened up.  And then FCA gets to work. From Adam Waters to Mark Effendian, the Lions will be looking to chip away at the McCort lead. And, if I have this right, they will need a pin by their top 20 heavyweight to pull out the win by a point. And frankly I couldn’t imagine the feeling there. 12 matches down. Your team trails by 5. Anything less than a tech fall, your team loses. A pin and you win. #1 vs #2. For the team state title. All on the line. I think he does it. As always, you can look at the match table and see exactly how I’m thinking this one plays out. Regardless, I think we’re in for one of the best duals of the season around the country. One that should have some great moments and plenty

2024 Montana State Finals

montana state finals

Welcome to the Montana State Finals home page. Here, you’ll find a short preview just looking at the returning state champions and how their brackets stack up this weekend. I’ll also have a recap of sorts, and whatever else I can gather up from the weekend out there in the great state of Montana. 2024 Montana State Preview Featuring Returning State Champions AA 2023 103 | Makael Aguayo | Billings West  113 | Zach Morse | Billings West 120 | Keyan Hernandez | Billings West 126 | Mason Gutenberger | Belgrade    2024 120 | Zach Morse | Billings West 126 | Keyan Hernandez | Billings West 126 | Mason Gutenberger | Belgrade 132 | Makael Aguayo | Billings West   With 2 state champions from last year in the same 126 bracket, you’d think that would be the best bracket in the state. Maybe it is as I’m not deep into the strength of Montana wrestling. But I can also tell you that Hernandez is undefeated while Gutenberger has 3 losses on the season to Hernandez, the most recent being 15-1. I don’t even know how these brackets are seeded but I know that the wrestler at the top of this one is Diesel Thompson who I’m guessing is related to Anders Thompson (only nationally ranked wrestler from Montana who oddly wasn’t a state champion last year). Gutenberger has a 5-3 win over Thompson this season.  It looks like the winner of Gutenberger and Thompson should get Hernandez and Hernandez is the odds on favorite to come out with another state title. At 120, it looks like another 3 horse race and maybe a tighter battle between this group. If the top seed is freshman Hunter Arriaga of Flathead, another freshman Chris Grossman of Billings Skyview beat him this season. And then Morse just beat Grossman to come into this weekend’s finals with the best win of his season I’d say.  The biggest obstacle for Morse this season was Cael Floerchinger, losing all 3 matches against him. But those were at 113 and that’s where Floerchinger is this weekend. Morse also suffered a loss to Talan Trettin but that appears to be an upset and he’ll have an early chance to avenge that one. I think I’d favor Grossman here, but you can’t count out the championship pedigree of Morse against the top of the weight who are freshmen. Finally, Makael Auayo is up at 132. One of his losses was to Diesel Thompson, and we know he’s at a lower weight. Then he also lost to Tristan Vladic, but then beat him in the most recent 2 matches, the last one being 9-0. Have to favor him should they wrestle a 4th time. Then finally, Cale Nedens, but Hardin is a A school. Having said all this, it looks like Aguayo should be a finalist and I might say that the 3 best wrestlers at this weight all come from the Eastern Division. However, David Grossman was disqualified and not in the state bracket. That means the top bracket finalist is probably Tristan Vladic.   A 2023 113 | Logan Barnes | Beaverhead County 120 | Broy Ketterling | Lockwood 126 | Cole Krutzfeldt | Lockwood 132 | Reece Graves | Sidney 138 | Tristan Stygles | Havre 205 | Jace DeShazer | Libby 285 | Holden Meged | Custer County   2024 120 | Cole Rogers | Three Forks 126 | Cole Krutzfeldt | Lockwood 138 | Brody Ketterling | Lockwood 145 | Tristan Stygles | Havre 145 | Reece Graves | Sidney 205 | Jace DeShazer | Libby 285 | Holden Meged | Custer County   I don’t know this for a fact, but it looks like Logan Barnes suffered a season ending injury so won’t be in the mix to defend his state title from last year. In the A 120 bracket, it looks like the favorite will be Cole Rogers of Three Forks whose only loss was to Grossman that’s up in AA. Without knowing the state very well, I believe Three Forks made a move up from B/C to A. That puts Cole Rogers up here this year after winning the B/C state title at 120 last year. I would say Krutzfeldt is a more than solid favorite in the 126 bracket. His only losses were to Keyan Hernandez (competes in AA) and someone from Wyoming. At 138, you’d have to call Ketterling a long shot to repeat here. He has a loss to Isaac Beardsley of Custer County, and finished 4th in the Eastern Division. That means he also took a loss to Nate Hill who is in this field. Even though both of those guys are in the bottom half of the bracket, Ketterling will still have to contend with Eastern runner up, Brody Keysor just to make the finals. Reece Graves has to be considered a big favorite at 145 to repeat this weekend. He’s the Eastern Division champion, where Stygles finished 4th. His only losses were to the same kid from Wyoming. Needless to say, he isn’t in the bracket. With the very little information I have about Montana wrestling, I’m calling Jace DeShazer the biggest favorite I’ve come across so far. Ok I lied. Maybe it’s Holden Meged.   B/C 2023 103 | Baylor Burton | Huntley Project 113 | Tim Schmidt | Lincoln County 120 | Cole Rogers | Three Forks 132 | Riley Davis | Baker 170 | Max Hannum | Thompson Falls   2024 120 | Baylor Burton | Huntley Project 120 | Tim Schmidt | Lincoln County 132 | Riley Davis | Baker 182 | Max Hannum | Thompson Falls   Ok so the B/C 120 bracket has 2 returning state champions. With Rogers being the winner at the weight, you might have favored him but they’re up a level. So we’re left with Schmidt and Burton and they were the Western and Eastern Division champions respectively.  We have a 1-0 season result

Where one semifinal match up, between Delbarton and Christian Brothers Academy will of particular note for us nationally. According to Mat Scouts, who currently leads the way regarding national team rankings, this will be the #9 team in the country (Delbarton) vs the #35 team in the country (CBA). Then looking at Full Circle who does New Jersey rankings, it’s #2 in the state against #4. So we know right off the bat, each team must have quality throughout the line up, and that is indeed true. What we also know is that within the Garden State, there are the top 2, St Joe’s Regional and Delbarton, and then everyone else. That’s just the reality. Just to sort buttress the point, they both wrestled St Peter’s Prep (#3 in the state) on the same day. While they beat CBA 42-24, they lost to Delbarton 66-0. Of course, the line up for SPP was not quite the same in both, there is no line up I know of that would have made up the 84 point differential between those scores. What this really means for me is that instead of the Blair and Sem duals for Delbarton, where I looked for paths for a Delbarton upset, now they play the villainous favorite role – and I will look for any possible path to a CBA win.  I’ll start this as I normally do, looking at the possible match ups. First, we should get a very good one at 106. Elite level. That will be the best. A national top 10 showdown that should actually be the NJ state finals in March (unless they seed that bracket in some crazy way). I’d have to favor Sontz coming in, simply due to common opponent results. Sontz has had the tougher season schedule, so he comes in with more losses. But both have lost to Dom Deputy and Shamus Regan. The difference is that Sontz has since defeated Regan twice. Perhaps Coluccio would have avenged that defeat himself given the opportunity. Sontz has also picked up a slew of top wins over Anello, Schwab, Seacrist, Diaz, and Mason. Coluccio has likewise defeated Diaz and Mason. So, as I say, to me the data supports Sontz as the favorite but this should be as close as it gets.  113 doesn’t quite match 106 on paper, but as we saw in the Blair dual, Terranova can provide problems for higher ranked foes and it won’t be a cake walk for Kenny. But there’s little to suggest the upset is in the cards. For CBA to have a shot at this dual, they not only need a Kenny win, but I’d say it has to be by pin (how you like that word choice to make it rhyme?). Kenny entered the season as the top NJ wrestler at 113 and has done nothing to fall short of that status. His only losses on the season are to Ayden Smith. Unfortunately for the rest of NJ, Smith is in Pennsylvania.  As we sit after the first two weights, I have it 1-1 on the match count, and advantage CBA on the scoreboard due to likely bonus at 113. If they have someone at 106 (maybe Kellen Duffy?) who could give Sontz a run, perhaps CBA bumps these two up and gets the win at 113 with Coluccio and then sees what Kenny can do against Dan Jones at 120, where otherwise Delbarton is a solid favorite once again. The downside here is that they could lose 106 by bonus, 113 with Terranova kinda shocking Coluccio, and then the bigger Jones handling Kenny. So there’s risk here but when you come in heavily disadvantaged sometimes you have to take some bigger risks. Who knows, just a thought. As for the current likely match at 120, it is a top 5 battle within the state. However, NJ at 120 is really all about Anthony Knox and the likelihood of Jones reaching the state finals to give him a rematch from last year. Jones on the season has 2 losses, both to Nate Desmond. So where Knox has separated from the rest of the pack, Jones I believe should be given that same credit compared to those behind him. Duffy is definitely solid and should be in the mix to medal at Atlantic City at the end of the season. Much crazier things have happened on a wrestling mat than him beating Jones. He’s already demonstrated an ability to compete with national level guys, losing 4-0 to Gauge Botero and 5-3 to Lukas Littleton Mascaro. A win here isn’t something I can predict,
