2023 Beast of the East Preview: Teams By State and Region

2023 Beast of the East School List Obviously, not every school is bringing all their wrestlers. Some will bring the ones expected to be most competitive and get the most out of the experience. Others, like Sem, may have a guy or two headed to Senior Nationals this weekend instead. Again, I always try to be as accurate as possible but I can only work with the info I am given. So first up, the school list at this year’s BOTE. I have them grouped by state, or by region if the state doesn’t have many entries. The BOTE is one of the toughest tournaments in-season every season. In fact, I’d say it’s a pretty clear #2 behind Ironman. Credit to the school and wrestlers set to compete in both on back to back weekends. Those schools are marked with an *. How it compares to Ironman. You lose all the Oklahoma schools, as well as most of the Ohio and Illinois schools. But you pick up a lot of New Jersey schools, some different Pennsylvania schools, and a whole bunch more from Virginia and the New England area. With Blair, Sem, and Lake Highland competing in both, it does ensure that whatever is missing from Ironman, the drop off isn’t too steep. The addition of New Jersey in particular gives us a first look at some of the nation’s best as this is the first week of the season for The Garden State. I’ll be back with more between now and Saturday. 2023 Ironman Recap
![](https://tkdwnmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Ironman-Finals-Line-Up-1024x576.png)
2023 Ironman Full Tournament Recap Top 10 Teams: 1 Wyoming Seminary (PA), PA 268.0 2 Blair Academy, NJ 174.5 3 Edmond North, OK 146.0 4 St. Edward, OH 121.0 5 Bishop McCort, PA 120.5 6 Malvern Prep, PA 113.0 7 Faith Christian Academy, PA 107.0 8 Stillwater, OK 104.5 9 Lake Highland Prep, FL 83.5 10 Perrysburg, OH 78.0 As we usually see, 4 of the top 10 schools are from the prep ranks. Out of those 4, 2 are the top 2. And of course, Sem is expected to be highly dominant this season and so far so good on that. They had 7 finalists and 4 champions. When we look at the 268 team points, we immediately ask, where does that rank all-time at this tournament? So we shall see. First off, last year Blair Academy won with 190.5. That would have been good enough to win this year, had Sem not existed or something. We’ll also look at where the 93.5 point gap between 1 and 2 ranks as well. The top historical team point totals: 1 1999 St Edward 297 2 2001 Blair Academy 287 3 2008 Blair Academy 282 4 2018 Blair Academy 276 5 2003 Blair Academy 273 6 2023 Wyoming Seminary 268 7 2000 St Edward 264 8 2006 St Edward 260 9 2011 Blair Academy 252 10 2007 St Paris Graham 247 10 2017 Blair Academy 247 Ok so, Blair Academy is just different. That’s crazy. The Buccaneers have 6 of the top 11 team point totals. No one is close to that. But this year’s Blue Knights definitely held their own from a historical perspective with the 6 highest score ever. As for the winning margin, as you would imagine, Blair is going to win that again most likely. 1 2018 Blair Academy +100 2 1999 St Edward +97 3 2023 Wyoming Seminary +93.5 4 2003 Blair Academy +90 5 2016 Blair Academy +69 6 1997 St Edward +56 7 2017 Blair Academy +53 8 2008 Blair Academy +48 8 2012 Blair Academy +48 10 2001 Blair Academy +46 So yes, once again the Blair Bucs dominate this list. However, the 2023 Blue Knights can walk away knowing they were one of the most dominant teams in this tournament’s history. As for the 7 finalists and 4 champions. Again, we assume Blair will lead the way. And in fact, the 2001 Blair team finished with 6 champions which is tied with 1997 St Edward for the most. As far as medalists overall, the 2003 Blair team is the only to date to have 14 (the max possible now) reach the podium. Oddly, they only had 1 champion that year. So, we didn’t see any records broken by the nation’s #1 team, but we did see a level of domination we expected. I mean you take an already stacked line up and add 3 PIAA state champions, what do you expect to happen? So now we get to the weight recaps. 106 Top 8: Joey Bachmann of Faith Christian Academy Shamus Regan of Wyoming Seminary (PA) Ignacio Villasenor of Pomona Caleb Noble of Warren Township Rocco Cassioppi of Hononegah Vincenzo Anello of Blair Academy Liam McGettigan of Gilman School Timmy Mazur of St. Edward Coming in, we had a possible clash between #1 Joe Bachmann and #2 Ignacio Villasenor. We could have seen this one at Super 32 but Villasenor medical forfeited out of that and instead it was Bachmann against Rocco Hayes of Illinois. Now, assuming Villasenor was healthy, we were set up for a classic. We still did get a classic in the finals as it would be round 3 of the Bachmann vs Shamus Regan series. They went 1-0 in the Super 32 semifinals, 7-4 in a dual last week, and ultimately 5-3 here. All results in favor of Bachmann. The reason we didn’t see Villasenor (assuming he would have then got past Regan in the semifinals) is that yet another star freshman from Blair Academy – Vince Anello – outlasted him in a 3-2 UTB thriller. Coming into the event, Anello was ranked by yours truly and no one else. However, anyone the least bit familiar with the youth wrestling scene wouldn’t be shocked that he sort of announced his arrival on the HS scene with a 6th place finish. There was a little Illinois drama going on at this weight as Rocco Cassioppi would ultimately take 5th with wins over instate foes, Caleb Noble and Caden Correll. Along with Hayes, who wasn’t here, 106 in Illinois should be exciting. The surprise performance of the weekend at 106 goes to Gilman School’s Liam McGettigan. Somewhat off the radar, he walks away with a 7th place medal, one of only 2 from the Chesapeake Bay State to do so. The highlight of his tournament run was probably the 3-2 battle with Regan in the quarterfinals. 113 Top 8: Davis Motyka of Wyoming Seminary (PA) Hunter Taylor of Liberty Ayden Smith of Notre Dame Grey Burnett of Perrysburg Revin Dickman of Brownsburg Rylan Seacrist of Brecksville Dom Munaretto of St. Charles East Nicolas Garcia of Marmion Academy While I didn’t have Motyka winning the whole thing, I did say that his veteran savvy and just overall toughness could prove to be the difference between him and what is still a relatively young bunch. Of course Munaretto came in a fairly big favorite, having won this tournament a year ago and coming off a Super 32 championship in October. Though Buckeye State native Rylan Seacrist would send him to the consolations in the quarterfinals. Munaretto would then suffer another defeat to Indiana’s Revin Dickman before closing out with a 7th place finish and win over fellow Illinois wrestler Nick Garcia. Seacrist for his part looked like a definite viable title contender in that quarterfinals. It was 7-3. He was in control through the whole thing. He had the crowd behind him. Unfortunately he would suffer an injury I and
CA Ranked Wrestlers Weekend 12/10 Update

CA Ranked Wrestlers Update With most of Buchanan, Poway, and Gilroy in action, we had a few of the nationally ranked wrestlers from CA competing this weekend. Here’s a look at how they did. Of course most of these events don’t involve other nationally ranked wrestlers, so only their tournament finish is listed. There were 2 matches over the weekend that did have national implications. Collin Guffey met Leo Contino in the LCC Finals. Angelo Posada faced David Alonso in the Eastvale Finals. In the case of Guffey and Contino that was a top 10 match up, though currently ranked at different weights. For Posada and Alonso, Posada is on the brink of the top 10 while Alonso is in the next group of 25 where a win over Posada likely would have moved him in. I included the full list of current nationally ranked wrestlers from CA. If you know a result for someone that I missed, let me know, I’ll add it. 113 #15 Abram Cline (Granite Hills) – La Costa Canyon Champion #24 Henry Aslikyan (Birmingham) – Marauder Invite Champion 120 #8 Ronnie Ramirez (Walnut) – La Costa Canyon Champion #20 (113) Edwin Sierra (Poway) – Eastvale Champion 126 #17 (120) Moses Mendoza (Gilroy) – Weber Lawson Champion 132 #4 (126) Isaiah Cortez (Gilroy) – Weber Lawson Champion 138 #5 (132) Elijah Cortez (Gilroy) – Weber Lawson Champion 144 #6 (138) Paul Kelly (Poway) – Eastvale Champion #18 Joseph Toscano (Buchanan) – La Costa Canyon Champion 150 #9 Laird Root (Poway) – Eastvale Champion 157 #1 (150) Daniel Zepeda (Gilroy) – Weber Lawson Champion 165 #10 Collin Guffey (Granite Hills) – La Costa Canyon Champion #6 (157) Leo Contino (Buchanan) – La Costa Canyon Runner-Up {Guffey decision over Contino 7-1} 175 #13 Angelo Posada (Poway) – Eastvale Champion {Posada decision over Alonso 6-2} Complete List Of CA Nationally Ranked Wrestlers: 113 #13 Rocklin Zinkin (Buchanan) #15 Abram Cline (Granite Hills) #20 Edwin Sierra (Poway) #24 Henry Aslikyan (Birmingham) 120 #8 Ronnie Ramirez (Walnut) #17 Moses Mendoza (Gilroy) #24 Antonio Rodriguez (Los Gatos) 126 #4 Isaiah Cortez (Gilroy) #15 Isaiah Quintero (El Dorado) #24 Michael Romero (St John Bosco) 132 #5 Elijah Cortez (Gilroy) 138 #6 Paul Kelly (Poway) #25 Gavin Bauder (Buchanan) 144 #18 Joseph Toscano (Buchanan) 150 #1 Brock Mantanon (Palm Desert) #2 Daniel Zepeda (Gilroy) #8 Miguel Estrada (Frontier) #9 Laird Root (Poway) #10 Grigor Cholakyan (St John Bosco) #12 EJ Parco (Los Gatos) 157 #2 Joseph Antonio (St John Bosco) #6 Leo Contino (Buchanan) #11 Andrew Barbosa (Palm Desert) 165 #10 Collin Guffey (Granite Hills) #22 Adrien Reyes (Clovis) 175 #13 Angelo Posada (Poway) 190 #6 Sonny Kling (Canyon Springs) #18 Eugenio Franco (Corona Del Mar) #19 Thomas Sandoval (Vacaville) #22 Diego Costa (Palm Desert) 215 #1 Cody Merrill (Gilroy) #13 Robert Platt (Poway) 285 #8 Nick Sahakian (St John Bosco) #17 Coby Merrill (JW North)

2023 Dual Previews – Faith Christian Academy vs Wyoming Seminary
![](https://tkdwnmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/FCAWS-1024x576.png)
Faith Christian at Wyoming Seminary We’ve had some tournaments to look at but the season really gets started with the first major duals. Duals are the lifeblood of the sport from a spectator standpoint and I hope we continue to see that aspect of a team’s schedule feature big matches with competitive battles. While it’s difficult to envision anyone keeping a dual competitive with Sem this season, FCA has some very high caliber wrestlers that will make things interesting and provide what should be exciting moments. When we talk about the strength of Sem, we start with a line up that has 11 out of 14 starters ranked nationally. Then we look at some of the quality among those ranked. Where we find a couple world champions, Super 32 champions, and former PIAA champions making their prep debuts. To say the Blue Knights are loaded in 2023 is a massive understatement. So, it’s a daunting task ahead of FCA. One I’m sure that they’re excited for. And we as fans are excited as well. One of the great things about duals is to see the way coaches maneuver their line ups. Especially when you come in as a heavy underdog against a team like Sem, what does FCA do about it? We shall see. Sometimes there’s not much you can do. Unfortunately, one of their heavy hitters, Gauge Botero is out. He could have possibly lined up against Desmond at 120, giving FCA a real chance to flip that one. He could have taken on Lilledahl at 126, pulling a massive upset or at least keeping those team points down. Either way, he’s out so that’s one less nationally ranked match up we’ll get. Looking at the projected line ups, we’ll still get 5 nationally ranked battles: 106, 113, 165, 175, and with Correa up this week, 285. Based simply on the rankings, 106 is the headliner. Then you look at their 1-0 result at Super 32 and you think there’s a chance Regan flips this outcome here, in his home gym. I’m also interested to see how Weidemoyer bounces back after a tough loss to Asher Cunningham at The Surge with another battle against a top 20 opponent. And then the Adam Waters Dom Federici showdown at 175 should be great. 2023 Ironman Preview: Ranked Wrestlers By Weight
![](https://tkdwnmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/ironmanrankedbyweight-1024x576.png)
2023 Ironman Ranked Wrestlers by Weight We keep building toward the best in-season tournament of the year. We looked at the ranked wrestlers per school yesterday. You can check that out here: https://tkdwnmedia.com/2023-walsh-ironman-preview-all-ranked-wrestlers/ Now, we have them all broken out by weights. Of course you’ll notice a few things that just come with the territory of wrestling coverage. 1) Multiple guys from the same team at a weight. Ironman doesn’t allow that, so we’ll eventually see where they slot in. For now, I have them where I had them immediately following Super 32. 2) Guys at weights they won’t be competing in now that the season started. Basing rankings off a major event like Super 32 makes sense because we see hundreds of kids at one place against each other. However, once the season starts, we see movement. I expect that to be true here as well. So, with about 10 days to go, we’ll just have to deal with that the best we can. For the rest of the content leading up to next weekend, hopefully I can get even more accurate entries for the full preview. As for the weights, 150 leads the way with 14 out of 25. 144 comes next with 13. 106, 126, 144, 157, and 175 feature the top 2 in those weight classes. In the matter of 126, we have the top 4 in the same bracket, and 7 out of the top 10. When compared to Super 32 there are definitely weights that will prove tougher here. 126 is one. 144 is another one. 150 of course, assuming Duke is healthy now. With football season over for most, 285 also has many more from the top 10 here. And then 175 is easily the biggest jump in quality from Greensboro to Cuyahoga Falls. As mentioned, I’ll be back with a more in depth preview of the entire event. George Costanza As Wrestling Coach

George Costanza Coaches Wrestling With all the new interest in AI and ChatGPT, I decided to write an episode of Seinfeld where George Costanza becomes a wrestling coach. [Seinfeld and wrestling fans unite] INT. COFFEE SHOP – DAY Jerry and George are sitting at a table, having coffee. Jerry: “So, what have you been up to lately, George?” George: “Oh, you know, same old stuff. Trying to find a job, watching TV, sleeping.” Jerry: “Sounds exciting.” George: “Actually, I started coaching high school wrestling.” Jerry: “What? You don’t know anything about wrestling!” George: “I know enough to be a coach. It’s all about strategy and motivation.” Jerry: “I don’t know about that. You’re not exactly the motivational type.” George: “I’ll have you know that I’m an excellent motivator. I give them pep talks and tell them they’re the best. They eat it up!” Jerry: “I can’t even picture you in a wrestling singlet.” George: “Ha ha. Very funny. But I’m serious about this. I think I could be a great coach.” Jerry: “Okay, so what’s your big strategy?” George: “Well, I tell them to go for the legs. That’s where the weak spot is. And then, I tell them to put the other guy in a headlock and don’t let go until they submit.” Jerry: “That’s it? That’s your big strategy?” George: “Hey, it works for me.” Just then, Elaine walks in. Elaine: “Hey guys, what’s up?” Jerry: “George thinks he’s a wrestling coach now.” Elaine: “What? You know nothing about wrestling.” George: “That’s not true. I know enough to be a coach.” Elaine: “Okay, prove it. Let’s see you take on Kramer in a match.” George: “Kramer? He’s twice my size!” Elaine: “Chicken.” George: “Fine, I’ll do it. But only if you guys come to the match and cheer me on.” Jerry: “We wouldn’t miss it for the world.” INT. HIGH SCHOOL GYM – NIGHT The gym is packed with people cheering on the wrestlers. Jerry, Elaine, and Kramer are in the front row, cheering George on. George is in his wrestling singlet, ready to take on Kramer. The match begins, and George quickly goes for the legs, just like he said. Kramer, however, is too strong and throws George to the ground. Jerry: “Uh oh. This doesn’t look good.” Elaine: “Come on, George! You can do it!” Kramer puts George in a headlock, just like George said to do to his opponents. But George can’t seem to break free. Jerry: “It’s not looking good for George.” Suddenly, George remembers something he saw on TV. He uses a move he saw on a wrestling match and flips Kramer over onto his back. The crowd goes wild as the referee declares George the winner. Jerry, Elaine, and Kramer rush to George and lift him up in the air. Jerry: “I can’t believe it! You did it!” George: “I told you, I’m an excellent motivator.” Kramer: “That was amazing, George. You should be a wrestling coach.” George: “I already am.” Elaine: “Well, I guess you proved us all wrong.” George: “I told you, I know what I’m doing.” The group cheers as the camera pans out on the gym and the cheering crowd.
A Brief Intro

A Brief Intro To Me With A Made Up Q&A Some Basic FAQ’s 1: Where am I from? Los Angeles CA 2: Where do I live? Baltimore MD 3: Did I wrestle? Yes, for 4 years of HS 4: Was I good? In my own mind. 5: When did I start doing all this? When I was coaching back in 2016. 6: What Is My Mission? To be a positive influence toward the growth of the sport of wrestling. 7: What Is My Vision? That I will create one of the most trusted sources for all things wrestling. 8: What Is My Goal? That I will appeal to and connect with an audience currently outside the wrestling community and bring them into the fold. 9: What Makes Me Different From Others? I’m 100% independent and free of agenda beyond my mission. I have unique ways of telling stories, designing and delivering content, and connecting with people. 10: What Do I Regret Most About My Wrestling Career? That I didn’t take it *seriously* as a lifelong endeavor and ended up without much of a career at all. That when I was first introduced to the sport I thought it was lame and not really worth my time. I was too cool for it. 11: What Do I Like Most About Wrestling Now? That you get out what you put in 12: Why Do You Focus On HS Wrestling? I think the challenges unique to HS athletes make for compelling stories and they’re still closer to the beginning of their journey than the end. 13: How Can We Support What You’re Doing? 1) Follow on Facebook, IG, Tiktok, YouTube = Tkdwn Media 2) Subscribe here 3) Introduce me to potential advertisers and sponsors of upcoming content series 4) I’ll have merchandise for sale soon 14: Will I Ever Charge For Content Access? No. That’s not conducive to growing the sport. Final Thoughts: In today’s entertainment landscape, everyone has a content platform and charges a subscription. We’ve cut the cord only to buy back all the same channels independently. Wrestling has a few people providing content from rankings to podcasts to articles and most if not all charge for access. I’m also asking people to join me on this journey and possibly subscribe to me. I’m not a lifer. I don’t come with a history or legacy of equity built in within the wrestling community. I don’t have a name that people just see and jump on board. Yet. So in the meantime, my plan is to continue setting the bar for quality in content and build that trust from the ground up. I think the people I’ve met so far and done stories on, etc will attest to the respect I have for the sport, the people in it, and the approach I have. I’m excited for how Ive grown and look forward to much more!
