2023 NWHOF Dual Classic Recap: New Jersey
NWHOF New Jersey Recap Delbarton – 4th Place (3-2) Delbarton was one of the nation’s best a season ago and come into this season again among the nation’s top 10. The difference I suppose is that they were the top ranked New Jersey school until a loss to St Joe’s Regional late last Winter. This season, SJR enters slightly ahead of them in the Mat Scouts Fab 50, 7th to 9th. While they return a lot, they do lose two state champions in Tyler Vazquez and Simon Ruiz. Still on the squad are a pair of state champions, Alessio Perentin and Louie Cerchio. And then a slew of placers and hopefuls. Newcomer Cam Sontz is one of the nation’s best at 106. He’s our top ranked from the state, but New Jersey should be pretty strong at that weight so we’ll see how it plays out. So, coming to the HOF Duals, they were the favorite to win Pool D. A group that included Colorado power Pomona, one of Illinois best teams in Joliet Catholic (in the state of Illinois competing at the 3A level for the first time in school history), and perennial top 10 team Lake Highland Prep. And they took care of business in pool action, finishing 3-0 and earning a spot in the GOLD bracket on day 2. While their closest result in day was still +29 points, day 2 would present a whole different set of challenges. They faced #1 in the country Wyoming Seminary in the semifinals and then #5 Poway from California. The dual with Sem was definitely highly anticipated, even though they have a dual with them coming up later this season. Buchanan and Clovis also have a dual against each other so they were separated on day 2, even though Clovis earned a spot in the SILVER bracket. I mention that only to say I thought maybe Sem and Delbarton would ask for the same thing. They didn’t, so I’d say we got a fair preview of what’s to come later. However, like most previews, it wasn’t the complete story. Delbarton was without Sophomore Jayden James and Sem was similarly without Vince Bouzakis and Joe Sealey. We still got 3 highly anticipated nationally ranked match ups. At 106, Shamus Regan vs Cam Sontz. At 120, Nate Desmond vs Dan Jones. And at 175, Dom Federici vs Louie Cerchio. Interestingly enough, only the 120 result fell to the higher ranked wrestler. Sontz was able to avenge an earlier loss to Regan and Federici pulled off a nice “upset” in an OT thriller. No telling how these go in round 2. One of the more intriguing individual matches will be Sealey vs Perentin at 165. We didn’t get that this time, but should in January. All in all, I think there’s some good things from this one to take away for the Green Wave. In particular performances from Ryan DeGeorge at 126 and Gabe Logan at 150. They went a combined 9-1 and could be ready for that 2nd dual where they are expected to face Luke Lilledahl and Bouzakis respectively. Big Sem favorites going in but perhaps they’ll build off this and shock the world. You can see all the box scores below! 2023 NWHOF Dual Classic Recap: California
NWHOF California Recap Poway – 3rd Place (4-1) Poway came to the HOF duals leading a trio of CA schools that included Clovis city rivals Buchanan and Clovis. Because there were 2 prep schools among the 16 teams, the CA schools would need to be separated from them in day 1 pool action and then day 2 would be determined by performance and then adjusted accordingly if scheduled to face one of the prep schools. This meant that on day 1, 2 of the 3 CA schools would be in pool action together, and it was Poway and Clovis. So when it comes to CA relevance in terms of ranking and perhaps seeding for Doc B, or state, or wherever the two schools are competing again, that dual might be the most interesting to some of you. As for the two day event, Poway controlled the pool action, never really being completely tested. Stillwater did the best against the Titans when looking at matches won. However, they still won that one 9-5 and by the same 21 points that they beat Clovis. Obviously, scoring in duals is different than a tournament like state, but looking at the Poway lineup this week, and knowing who else they add in a couple weeks, it’s definitely going to be one of the most contentious team state titles in a long time. 2 of Poway’s 3 heaviest hitters went 5-0. The other one, Angelo Posada, wasn’t here. The most surprising performance was Mario Carini. Not even guaranteed a starting spot, he held his own admirably against some of the nation’s best. He finished 4-1. In the end, Poway would make it to the GOLD pool, where they were slotted with Wyoming Seminary (Pool A), Edmond North (Pool B), and Delbarton (Pool D). Because of the CIF rule against prep school competition, if Poway beat Edmond North or lost to them, they would wrestle Delbarton after. As it turns out, that dual with Edmond North was one of the best of the two days. It came down to criteria (i). Which would go to Edmond North. In the 3rd place match, they got a few forfeits from Delbarton, and rode those 18 points to a 19 point win. The wrestled matches went 6-5 to Poway. NWHOF Ranked Wrestlers Update Day 1 is done. And as we would expect, there were quite a few notable individual matches throughout. There were some surprises, like Jude Correa bumping up to HWT and needing OT to beat Kruz Goff of Blackwell, OK. But there weren’t any big upsets. 2023 NWHOF Dual Classic Wrestling Preview
2023 National Wrestling Hall Of Fame Dual Classic The National Wrestling HOF Duals are back this week. There’s 16 schools divided into 4 pools of 4 teams. Each team will wrestle the other 3 teams in their pool. Then based on how they finish in pool action they will be sent into a bracket competition. The only hiccup could be if and when Sem or Lake Highland would be set to face any of the 3 California schools. In which case, they will adjust the match ups. While I currently don’t do team rankings (perhaps that’s the next evolution for me), 13 of the 16 teams are ranked in the Mat Scouts top 50. We have the projected line ups listed below in easy to read tables. You can see who is nationally ranked and why a team like Sem, with 11 of 14 weights ranked, is such a massive favorite. Should be some great action over the two days. Streaming will be on Mat Scouts Rokfin channel. https://rokfin.com/MatScouts Pool A Sem should dominate this one. They have 9 guys favored to go 3-0. And among the rest, a couple who could definitely do that as well. As for individual matches, Gage Walker vs Matt Botello and Ishmael Guerrero vs Anthony Evanitsky are the two that stand out. Perhaps for the Sem vs Perry dual, we see Correa bump up vs Fockler. That would be a good one. For Bixby, Roller has been out, not sure that he’s expected to be here or not. If so, might be too soon to bump up for Bouzakis, but that would be a classic if both fully healthy. The biggest test should come from Buchanan. They’re a perennial top 10 team, spending many years in the top 5 or even the top 3. Because the state is way out west and CA schools can’t compete at the bigger tournaments with prep schools anymore, their talent can get overlooked. Woodward isn’t ranked at 106 but could definitely go 3-0. Bauder just fell out of our rankings but could push Hollingsworth. Toscano could do likewise with Schneider. I think Tuttle vs St Peter’s will be a stellar dual as well. Outside of that, it could come down to the fact that the remaining ranked guys for Stillwater might get pushed a little more than the remaining ranked guys for Poway. Meaning, it could be determined by a couple matches by major vs decision or pin vs major. Aside from Sierra vs Thomas at 113, the best match here could be at 126 with JJ McComas vs Nikade Zinkin. If Rios is competing this week, don’t let the unranked fool you, he’s probably a top 15 national talent, maybe higher. He just hasn’t been heard from for awhile. CA Ranked Wrestlers Weekend Update Dec. 17
CA Ranked Wrestlers Update Buchanan and Clovis were at Zinkin. Gilroy and SJB were at Reno. Poway A team was not in action. The rest were scattered. Here’s a look at how they did. Of course most of these events don’t involve other nationally ranked wrestlers, so only their tournament finish is listed. The headliner result for the state of CA would have to be EJ Parco over Daniel Zepeda in the Reno semifinals. When I mention “key results” it is specific to CA vs CA wrestlers who are either nationally ranked or on the cusp of it. These results and more factor into the next rankings coming this week. I included the full list of current nationally ranked wrestlers from CA. 2023 Zinkin Classic: Preview Those in the California know know that DOC B is the pinnacle tournament, the crown jewel of the Golden State. And then a group of about five tournaments can make reasonable arguments they are the next best thingt. On a year-to-year basis Five Counties, Temecula, LCC’s Hamada, and the LA TOC all take turns as the “next best”. However, we’d say that the Zinkin Classic year in and year out, typically is that next level invite. And the reason is quite simple, you get basically the entire Central Valley, and all of Buchanan’s and Clovis High kids in the brackets. Year after year, this tournament serves as the “de facto” wrestle off for the most storied programs in California. This year will be no different. Buchanan, ranked #1 in the State, is still regarded as the premier program and the favorite to Win an 8th title in 8 tries. But this is also the most vulnerable this team has been in years. They have 0 returning State Champions and several holes that will need to be addressed. Additionally, Gilroy, St. John Bosco, and Poway all have multiple top ranked kids that can cause complete chaos at the state meet. So back to the Zinkin. Buchanan should win the tourney, and the results will likely determine who we will see in Bakersfield, late February. 106 lbs This weight class is absolutely loaded. There could be 10 of the top 12 kids in the state per the CA Ranker. Leading the pack: Birmingham sophomore Henry Aslikyan. He will be the #1 seed. We will also see the season debut of Buchanan wrestler Blake Woodward at this weight class. Standout Freshman Anthony Garza of Clovis High could be the #3 seed. However, as a Freshman, we get him in the #8 spot. Add an additional six State Qualifiers into this bracket! Fireworks will start in the round of 16. 113 lbs Let’s start with Rocklin Zinkin, Buchanan #1 seed, Thunder Lewis Clovis High #2 seed, sound familiar? These two tangled five times last season with many of those matchups listed as “instant classics”. The 3 seed should be Sacramento area sophomore Siray Sidhu. This Del Oro (Newcastle) wrestler is coming off a 5th place finish at the state meet. Add in, seven additional wrestlers ranked in the top 15 in the state of California. Did we say the Fireworks will start in the round of 16? Yes, we did. We said it for 106 and we say it again for 113. 120 lbs #5 ranked CJ Huerta, Buchanan, placed third at the State Meet last season. The sophomore returns and is undefeated on this young season. #2 seed will be Golden West’s Caleb Rivas and Elk Grove Senior Octavio Negrete will come in as the #3 seed. Eight of the top 10 seeds are from the Central Valley. This tourney will shape the preliminary pecking order in the Central Valley. 126 lbs Defending champion Nikade Zinkin Clovis will lead the field. Currently ranked #2 in State, he will be challenged by returning State placer Mason Carillo Royal HS. Buchanan’s Ashton Besmer, currently #6 in the State, and a defending Zinkin champion, will be in as the #3 seed, coming off an impressive win down south at the “Hamada Classic”. Get this: an additional six ranked wrestlers in the state of CA top 16 will be in the field. Did we say the Fireworks will start in the round of 16? Yes, because it’s a recurring theme! 132 lbs Tournament high Fifty-Five wrestlers registered. Jacob Perez Monache will be the #1 seed. Then complete top 20 chaos. Paris Ruiz of Buchanan will be the #2 seed. He owns a win over Fargo Champion Leo Maestas. Remember those wrestle off’s, Buchanan will enter two other wrestlers, each on their own merit would be top 15 in the State or better. Led by Post Season Nationals All American Anthony Harris. How about Ivan Arias who was last seen at Super 32, 4-2 overall. Adding to the intrigue will be Clovis West wrestle offs with Jeff Lopez and above mentioned Maestas. Eli Granada of Clovis gave Elijah Cortez a battle just last week. Returning State qualifier Josh Requena of Camarillo in the field, the Round of 16 will be tough to navigate. Dare we say, fireworks? 138 lbs This class will be led by returning State Finalist Gavin Bauder of Buchanan. He is undefeated this year and is the #1 seed. Aiden Simmons of Bakersfield returning State placer and he is undefeated; he comes in at the #2 seed. They will be challenged by two-time returning State Medalist Thomas Thongseng of Exeter. This weight will include two standout entries from Clovis High (#4 Wyatt Lewis and #6 Raymond Rivera). Top ten seeds are from the Central Section. 144 lbs #1 Seed will be returning State Finalist Joseph Toscano. He has majored or pinned everyone this season at 13-0. Hercules Windrath Fountain Valley this Cal Poly commit is undefeated and will be the #2 seed. Slava Shahbazyan of Chaminade is undefeated and the #3 seed. Add in #7 Ranked Jagger French of Del Oro also undefeated and #8 James Wright Clovis who is undefeated. Four other top 20 ranked wrestlers in the bracket. Fun will start in the round of 16. 150 lbs By far the most wide-open bracket of the tournament. Seeds appear to represent the Southern Section, San Joaquin Section and of course the Central Section. However, our #1 Seed is North Coast’s Jayson Victoria of Granada High School. Based on body of work this year, #3 seed Noah Reynolds Clovis would appear to be the favorite. The field of 53 wrestlers also includes #2 seed Max Delbosque Clovis North, Christian Herrera Bakersfield and Jaxtyn Frost Buchanan who should all be in the mix. Also, Jacob Belden San Clemente and Sean Otero Norwalk will represent the Southern Section. 157 lbs At this weight we can expect to see State #1 Beau
