National High School Ranked Wrestler Weekend Roundup 12/15

Nationally Ranked Wrestlers Weekend Recap As I plan to update rankings after every big weekend, I thought it would be good to share the results from events around the country. Some guys didn’t compete where their team did. In those cases, I left the event blank.  There are quite a few weight changes that will be reflected in the next rankings update as well. But here, they are grouped where we had them last week. A couple events I couldn’t find specific match results for. If you see an error or know of a result, let me know. 106 Name School Event Result Notable Wins Notable Losses Joe Bachmann Faith Christian Beast 1st Place Sontz Shamus Regan Wyoming Seminary – Ignacio Villasenor Pomona – Rocco Hayes Sandburg Whitlatch 3rd Place Noble Ezekiel Witt Junction City – Rocco Cassioppi Honenegah Dvorak 1st Place Caleb Noble Waukegan Whilatch 1st Place Hayes Vincenzo Anello Blair Beast 3rd Place McGettigan Tyler Harper Norwalk Waterloo 6-0 Wyatt Lees Detroit Central Catholic Roughneck Duals 9-1 Burnett Cameron Sontz Delbarton Beast 2nd Place Bachmann Killian Colluccio Christian Brothers Ron Mazzola 1st Place Liam McGettigan Gilman Beast 4th Place Anello Allen Woo Montini – Timmy Mazur St Edward LaSalle Quad unknown Luke Green Aurora Solon 3rd Place B. 2023 Beast of the East Preview: Ranked Wrestlers By Weight & School

2023 Beast of the East: Ranked Wrestlers By Team & Weight So here’s a look at all the ranked wrestlers by school and listed per weight. Definitely over 60, and that’s without the Wyoming Seminary A team in attendance too. Of course some others, like Blair, could have guys not enter as well. I think you’d have to say 175 is the best weight at the top. 4 in the top 10, including the new #1 and Ironman champ Wright.  If DeLuca wrestles here, finals against Seidel would be salty. 2023 Zinkin Classic Preview

2023 Zinkin Classic: Preview Those in the California know know that DOC B is the pinnacle tournament, the crown jewel of the Golden State.  And then a group of about five tournaments can make reasonable arguments they are the next best thingt.  On a year-to-year basis Five Counties, Temecula, LCC’s Hamada, and the LA TOC all take turns as the “next best”. However, we’d say that the Zinkin Classic year in and year out, typically is that next level invite.  And the reason is quite simple, you get basically the entire Central Valley, and all of Buchanan’s and Clovis High kids in the brackets.   Year after year, this tournament serves as the “de facto” wrestle off for the most storied programs in California.  This year will be no different.  Buchanan, ranked #1 in the State, is still regarded as the premier program and the favorite to Win an 8th title in 8 tries.  But this is also the most vulnerable this team has been in years.  They have 0 returning State Champions and several holes that will need to be addressed. Additionally, Gilroy, St. John Bosco, and Poway all have multiple top ranked kids that can cause complete chaos at the state meet. So back to the Zinkin. Buchanan should win the tourney, and the results will likely determine who we will see in Bakersfield, late February.  106 lbs This weight class is absolutely loaded.  There could be 10 of the top 12 kids in the state per the CA Ranker. Leading the pack: Birmingham sophomore Henry Aslikyan. He will be the #1 seed. We will also see the season debut of Buchanan wrestler Blake Woodward at this weight class. Standout Freshman Anthony Garza of Clovis High could be the #3 seed. However, as a Freshman, we get him in the #8 spot. Add an additional six State Qualifiers into this bracket! Fireworks will start in the round of 16. 113 lbs Let’s start with Rocklin Zinkin, Buchanan #1 seed, Thunder Lewis Clovis High #2 seed, sound familiar? These two tangled five times last season with many of those matchups listed as “instant classics”. The 3 seed should be Sacramento area sophomore Siray Sidhu.  This Del Oro (Newcastle) wrestler is coming off a 5th place finish at the state meet.  Add in, seven additional wrestlers ranked in the top 15 in the state of California. Did we say the Fireworks will start in the round of 16? Yes, we did. We said it for 106 and we say it again for 113. 120 lbs #5 ranked CJ Huerta, Buchanan, placed third at the State Meet last season. The sophomore returns and is undefeated on this young season.  #2 seed will be Golden West’s Caleb Rivas and Elk Grove Senior Octavio Negrete will come in as the #3 seed. Eight of the top 10 seeds are from the Central Valley. This tourney will shape the preliminary pecking order in the Central Valley.  126 lbs Defending champion Nikade Zinkin Clovis will lead the field.  Currently ranked #2 in State, he will be challenged by returning State placer Mason Carillo Royal HS.  Buchanan’s Ashton Besmer, currently #6 in the State, and a defending Zinkin champion, will be in as the #3 seed, coming off an impressive win down south at the “Hamada Classic”. Get this: an additional six ranked wrestlers in the state of CA top 16 will be in the field. Did we say the Fireworks will start in the round of 16? Yes, because it’s a recurring theme! 132 lbs Tournament high Fifty-Five wrestlers registered.  Jacob Perez Monache will be the #1 seed.  Then complete top 20 chaos.  Paris Ruiz of Buchanan will be the #2 seed. He owns a win over Fargo Champion Leo Maestas.  Remember those wrestle off’s, Buchanan will enter two other wrestlers, each on their own merit would be top 15 in the State or better.  Led by Post Season Nationals All American Anthony Harris. How about Ivan Arias who was last seen at Super 32, 4-2 overall.  Adding to the intrigue will be Clovis West wrestle offs with Jeff Lopez and above mentioned Maestas.  Eli Granada of Clovis gave Elijah Cortez a battle just last week. Returning State qualifier Josh Requena of Camarillo in the field, the Round of 16 will be tough to navigate. Dare we say, fireworks? 138 lbs This class will be led by returning State Finalist Gavin Bauder of Buchanan. He is undefeated this year and is the #1 seed.  Aiden Simmons of Bakersfield returning State placer and he is undefeated; he comes in at the #2 seed. They will be challenged by two-time returning State Medalist Thomas Thongseng of Exeter. This weight will include two standout entries from Clovis High (#4 Wyatt Lewis and #6 Raymond Rivera). Top ten seeds are from the Central Section.  144 lbs #1 Seed will be returning State Finalist Joseph Toscano. He has majored or pinned everyone this season at 13-0.  Hercules Windrath Fountain Valley this Cal Poly commit is undefeated and will be the #2 seed. Slava Shahbazyan of Chaminade is undefeated and the #3 seed.  Add in #7 Ranked Jagger French of Del Oro also undefeated and #8 James Wright Clovis who is undefeated.  Four other top 20 ranked wrestlers in the bracket.  Fun will start in the round of 16.  150 lbs By far the most wide-open bracket of the tournament.  Seeds appear to represent the Southern Section, San Joaquin Section and of course the Central Section.  However, our #1 Seed is North Coast’s Jayson Victoria of Granada High School.  Based on body of work this year, #3 seed Noah Reynolds Clovis would appear to be the favorite.  The field of 53 wrestlers also includes #2 seed Max Delbosque Clovis North, Christian Herrera Bakersfield and Jaxtyn Frost Buchanan who should all be in the mix.  Also, Jacob Belden San Clemente and Sean Otero Norwalk will represent the Southern Section.   157 lbs At this weight we can expect to see State #1 Beau

2023 Beast of the East Preview: Ironman Teams & Wrestlers

2023 Beast of the East: Teams And Wrestlers From Ironman So here’s a look at all the schools and their wrestlers who competed at Ironman last week. I included the place they earned where relevant (number in parentheses).  I believe Lilledahl and Sealey from Sem will be sitting this out, choosing to compete at Senior Nationals instead. Obviously, others could be doing that too. I don’t know. 2023 Beast of the East Preview: Teams By State and Region

2023 Beast of the East School List Obviously, not every school is bringing all their wrestlers. Some will bring the ones expected to be most competitive and get the most out of the experience. Others, like Sem, may have a guy or two headed to Senior Nationals this weekend instead. Again, I always try to be as accurate as possible but I can only work with the info I am given. So first up, the school list at this year’s BOTE. I have them grouped by state, or by region if the state doesn’t have many entries. The BOTE is one of the toughest tournaments in-season every season. In fact, I’d say it’s a pretty clear #2 behind Ironman. Credit to the school and wrestlers set to compete in both on back to back weekends. Those schools are marked with an *.  How it compares to Ironman. You lose all the Oklahoma schools, as well as most of the Ohio and Illinois schools. But you pick up a lot of New Jersey schools, some different Pennsylvania schools, and a whole bunch more from Virginia and the New England area. With Blair, Sem, and Lake Highland competing in both, it does ensure that whatever is missing from Ironman, the drop off isn’t too steep. The addition of New Jersey in particular gives us a first look at some of the nation’s best as this is the first week of the season for The Garden State. I’ll be back with more between now and Saturday. 2023 Ironman Recap

2023 Ironman Full Tournament Recap Top 10 Teams: 1 Wyoming Seminary (PA), PA  268.0 2 Blair Academy, NJ  174.5 3 Edmond North, OK  146.0 4 St. Edward, OH  121.0 5 Bishop McCort, PA  120.5 6 Malvern Prep, PA  113.0 7 Faith Christian Academy, PA  107.0 8 Stillwater, OK  104.5 9 Lake Highland Prep, FL  83.5 10 Perrysburg, OH  78.0 As we usually see, 4 of the top 10 schools are from the prep ranks. Out of those 4, 2 are the top 2. And of course, Sem is expected to be highly dominant this season and so far so good on that. They had 7 finalists and 4 champions.  When we look at the 268 team points, we immediately ask, where does that rank all-time at this tournament? So we shall see. First off, last year Blair Academy won with 190.5. That would have been good enough to win this year, had Sem not existed or something. We’ll also look at where the 93.5 point gap between 1 and 2 ranks as well. The top historical team point totals: 1 1999 St Edward 297 2 2001 Blair Academy 287 3 2008 Blair Academy 282 4 2018 Blair Academy 276 5 2003 Blair Academy 273 6 2023 Wyoming Seminary 268 7 2000 St Edward 264 8 2006 St Edward 260 9 2011 Blair Academy 252 10 2007 St Paris Graham 247 10 2017 Blair Academy 247 Ok so, Blair Academy is just different. That’s crazy. The Buccaneers have 6 of the top 11 team point totals. No one is close to that. But this year’s Blue Knights definitely held their own from a historical perspective with the 6 highest score ever. As for the winning margin, as you would imagine, Blair is going to win that again most likely.  1 2018 Blair Academy +100 2 1999 St Edward +97 3 2023 Wyoming Seminary +93.5 4 2003 Blair Academy  +90 5 2016 Blair Academy +69 6 1997 St Edward +56 7 2017 Blair Academy +53 8 2008 Blair Academy +48 8 2012 Blair Academy +48 10 2001 Blair Academy +46 So yes, once again the Blair Bucs dominate this list. However, the 2023 Blue Knights can walk away knowing they were one of the most dominant teams in this tournament’s history. As for the 7 finalists and 4 champions. Again, we assume Blair will lead the way. And in fact, the 2001 Blair team finished with 6 champions which is tied with 1997 St Edward for the most. As far as medalists overall, the 2003 Blair team is the only to date to have 14 (the max possible now) reach the podium. Oddly, they only had 1 champion that year. So, we didn’t see any records broken by the nation’s #1 team, but we did see a level of domination we expected. I mean you take an already stacked line up and add 3 PIAA state champions, what do you expect to happen? So now we get to the weight recaps.   106 Top 8: Joey Bachmann of Faith Christian Academy Shamus Regan of Wyoming Seminary (PA) Ignacio Villasenor of Pomona Caleb Noble of Warren Township Rocco Cassioppi of Hononegah Vincenzo Anello of Blair Academy Liam McGettigan of Gilman School Timmy Mazur of St. Edward Coming in, we had a possible clash between #1 Joe Bachmann and #2 Ignacio Villasenor. We could have seen this one at Super 32 but Villasenor medical forfeited out of that and instead it was Bachmann against Rocco Hayes of Illinois. Now, assuming Villasenor was healthy, we were set up for a classic. We still did get a classic in the finals as it would be round 3 of the Bachmann vs Shamus Regan series. They went 1-0 in the Super 32 semifinals, 7-4 in a dual last week, and ultimately 5-3 here. All results in favor of Bachmann. The reason we didn’t see Villasenor (assuming he would have then got past Regan in the semifinals) is that yet another star freshman from Blair Academy – Vince Anello – outlasted him in a 3-2 UTB thriller. Coming into the event, Anello was ranked by yours truly and no one else. However, anyone the least bit familiar with the youth wrestling scene wouldn’t be shocked that he sort of announced his arrival on the HS scene with a 6th place finish. There was a little Illinois drama going on at this weight as Rocco Cassioppi would ultimately take 5th with wins over instate foes, Caleb Noble and Caden Correll. Along with Hayes, who wasn’t here, 106 in Illinois should be exciting. The surprise performance of the weekend at 106 goes to Gilman School’s Liam McGettigan. Somewhat off the radar, he walks away with a 7th place medal, one of only 2 from the Chesapeake Bay State to do so. The highlight of his tournament run was probably the 3-2 battle with Regan in the quarterfinals. 113 Top 8: Davis Motyka of Wyoming Seminary (PA) Hunter Taylor of Liberty Ayden Smith of Notre Dame Grey Burnett of Perrysburg Revin Dickman of Brownsburg Rylan Seacrist of Brecksville Dom Munaretto of St. Charles East Nicolas Garcia of Marmion Academy While I didn’t have Motyka winning the whole thing, I did say that his veteran savvy and just overall toughness could prove to be the difference between him and what is still a relatively young bunch. Of course Munaretto came in a fairly big favorite, having won this tournament a year ago and coming off a Super 32 championship in October. Though Buckeye State native Rylan Seacrist would send him to the consolations in the quarterfinals. Munaretto would then suffer another defeat to Indiana’s Revin Dickman before closing out with a 7th place finish and win over fellow  Illinois wrestler Nick Garcia. Seacrist for his part looked like a definite viable title contender in that quarterfinals. It was 7-3. He was in control through the whole thing. He had the crowd behind him. Unfortunately he would suffer an injury I and

CA Ranked Wrestlers Weekend 12/10 Update

CA Ranked Wrestlers Update With most of Buchanan, Poway, and Gilroy in action, we had a few of the nationally ranked wrestlers from CA competing this weekend. Here’s a look at how they did. Of course most of these events don’t involve other nationally ranked wrestlers, so only their tournament finish is listed. There were 2 matches over the weekend that did have national implications. Collin Guffey met Leo Contino in the LCC Finals. Angelo Posada faced David Alonso in the Eastvale Finals.  In the case of Guffey and Contino that was a top 10 match up, though currently ranked at different weights. For Posada and Alonso, Posada is on the brink of the top 10 while Alonso is in the next group of 25 where a win over Posada likely would have moved him in. I included the full list of current nationally ranked wrestlers from CA. 2023 Walsh Ironman Preview: Weight By Weight

The 2023 Walsh Ironman Tournament Preview There is no question what the toughest in-season tournament is every year. It’s this one. Just like there is no question what the toughest preview for this tournament is every year. It’s this one. Let’s get to it. 106 Export XLSExport CSV Seed Rank Name School State 1 1 Joe Bachmann Faith Christian PA 2 2 Ignacio Villasenor Pomona CO 3 4 Shamus Regan Wyoming Seminary Preps 4 7 Caleb Noble Warren Township IL 5 8 Rocco Cassioppi Hononengah IL 6 12 Ayden Dodd Perrysburg OH 7 20 Vincenzo Anello Blair Preps 8 NR Brighton Karvoski Green Farms Preps This is basically all freshmen. I don’t know who was in line for 4 Ironman titles prior to Covid, but there are couple sophomores who won last year back again, and this entire group is eligible for that should they come out crowned the champion. The favorite has to be Bachmann. He’s one of the top 2, 3 freshmen in the country and has done nothing coming into the season to give us reason to think otherwise.  Villasenor was supposed to be a big  challenger at Super 32 but suffered an injury and forfeited out. Assuming he’s rested, recovered, and ready I think he poses a nice challenge here. Regan battled Bachmann in the Super 32 semis to 1-0. They just wrestled again in last week’s headlining dual. Bachmann came out 7-3 that time. So, we’d give the edge to Bachmann again but these kids are super familiar with each other so you never know. Noble had an impressive Spring and Summer heading into his first HS season. I think right now you make him a clear candidate to reach the podium but not quite the title contender of the top 3. Cassioppi, like Noble, has been everywhere it seems. He’s picked up big wins – Dodd at Super 32 for example – and taken some tough losses. No one is more battle-tested. We’ll see if that serves him well through the frontside or even to spur a top 3 consolation run. Dodd is joined his teammate, Grey Burnett (113), to make up one of the most formidable lower weight duos in the country. When Burnett was at 106, he was top 5. Dodd comes in just outside our top 10 but should do substantially better than last year’s 1-2 showing. This might be some folks’ first time catching Anello. He enters this season as a super heralded youth star. He should be a fixture in the Blair lineup for years. I would be surprised and impressed if he knocked off one of the top 3. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he beat anyone else. Darkhorse(s): I think we always see Ohio guys overperform. That might be someone like Lincoln Rohr of Massillon Perry. Most Interesting Round Of 16: Caleb Noble vs Mason Rohr Potential Quarterfinals: Bachmann vs Karvoski Noble vs Cassioppi Villasenor vs Anello Regan vs Dodd Semifinals: Bachmann vs Cassioppi Villasenor vs Regan Finals: Bachmann vs Villasenor Champion: Joe Bachmann (Faith Christian, PA) 113 Export XLSExport CSV Seed Rank Name School State 1 2 Dom Munaretto St Charles East IL 2 5 Ayden Smith Notre Dame Green Pond PA 3 12 Grey Burnett Perrysburg OH 4 25 Hunter Taylor Liberty MO 5 20 Ethan Timar St Edward OH 6 8 Davis Motyka Wyoming Seminary Preps 7 11 Nicholas Garcia Marmion Academy IL 8 23 Aydan Thomas Stillwater OK We didn’t have to wait long to find our first returning champion. Last year, Munaretto was a freshman at 106 and left the weekend with the gold. His toughest battle proved to be the semifinals match up with Smith. Ayden is a multi-time PIAA state champ and I’m sure would love that rematch, since it’s most likely to occur in the finals. Smith would ultimately take 3rd last year. As mentioned with Dodd at 106, Burnett is the freshman phenom of this bunch and could definitely shake things up (as much as you’d say a 3 seed shakes things up). He took a slight upset loss at Super 32 to Rocco Hayes and while Hayes isn’t here for any possible revenge, what better way to get back to national prominence than a deep Ironman run? I have him coming in ranked 12th at 113 but he’s certainly capable of making me look dumb there. Hunter Taylor gets the 4 seed and you won’t find him ranked by anyone nationally  but me. So who is right? We shall see. He’s the elder statesman of the group, a senior committed to Oregon State. That could prove valuable in tough spots. Last year he finished 8th with 2 losses to Sebastian DeGennaro and a respectable loss at the hands of Marcus Blaze. There’s a couple Ohio kids that seem to fluctuate in other rankings, Timar is one of them. He finished 4th last year, ultimately losing to Smith in the consolation finals. He would go on to capture an Ohio D1 state title, that included a finals over Rylan Seacrist (seeded 9 here). Perhaps a bit of discrepancy between the 6 seeded Motyka and where I have him ranked among the group. As mentioned with Burnett, this could be the sort of match up Burnett ultimately wins. I just have to give a little credit to Motyka at this weight.  Garcia has been a fast riser after a very impressive Super 32 performance. Last year at Ironman, Garcia took a big loss to Javaan Yarbrough and then to Motyka. He avenged Motyka as part of that Super 32 run. Perhaps they get a rubber match of sorts this weekend. Aydan Thomas has had some really high moments and some sort of head scratching losses over the last year. I believe at his best, he could probably take out anyone here but Munaretto. But it’s tough to predict that for him. Darkhorse(s): Kole Davidheiser is the highest ranked unseeded. Depending where he lines up, he could
