National High School Ranked Wrestler Weekend Roundup 1/3

Nationally Ranked Wrestlers Weekend Recap Another weekend with a lot of action. Powerade was the main event and this year’s field was probably the 2nd toughest tournament of the season.  The Flavin is generally considered Illinois toughest event of the season and the Brecksville Invitational brought in some of the best from Ohio, Michigan, and other neighboring states. If a wrestler’s school was at an event but they didn’t compete, the event is still listed but the result is left empty. Also, not every tournament placement had notable wins, so many of those are also left empty. 106 Rank Name School State Event Result Notable Wins Notable Losses 1 Joe Bachmann Faith Christian PA – 2 Cameron Sontz Delbarton NJ Powerade 2nd Place Regan Deputy 3 Shamus Regan Wyoming Seminary Preps Powerade 3rd Place Esposito 2x; Diaz Sontz 4 Rocco Cassioppi Honenegah IL Mid-States 1st Place – – 5 Caleb Noble Warren IL – 6 Vincenzo Anello Blair Preps Sam Cali 1st Place – – 7 Rocco Hayes Sandburg IL Flavin 6-0 8 Killian Coluccio Christian Brothers NJ Powerade 4th Place Mason; Diaz Deputy; Regan 9 Liam McGettigan Gilman Preps Adam Janet 1st Place – – 10 Timmy Mazur St Edward OH Powerade 7th Place Shin Esposito; Deputy 11 Anthony Mason Southern Regional NJ Powerade dnp Esposito; Coluccio 12 Royce Malone Monrovia IN Mooresville 2nd Place – Je. 2024 Garlic City Rumble: Gilroy vs Layton

Now, there are years where this has been more of an “event” as far as multiple opponents (maybe in a round robin against each other). But last year it was Gilory vs Bixby and this year it’s Gilroy vs Layton. So, Gilory should come out on top in this one, but we’ll look at the projected line ups – knowing that duals almost never go according to the paper – and see how it should go. There’s also almost always an upset or two, or a bonus point win that on paper looked like a decision going in.   One of the benefits to this one from a preview perspective is that both teams were at Reno TOC with essentially their starting lineups, where Gilroy finished 2nd and Layton came in 4th. The big, huge, notable absence there was Cody Merrill. He hasn’t competed since Who’s #1 and may not be competing here either. Might not be at Doc B either. He’s one of the most aloof competitors across the country. He’s also one of the best, in my opinion the best. So we shall see. I’ll proceed as if he is in the line up.   Being that Layton is a decent underdog here, I’ll be looking for ways that they can maximize points. Keep in mind that I don’t know what weight anyone actually weighs in at, so for example, I might recommend Byrd at 215 for Layton but if he weighs in at 265 or something obviously that can’t happen.   106 Mike Kowalski vs Gavin Pongsai Both were in the Reno 106 bracket. Pongsai went 5-3 and finished 8th. Kowalski went 0-2. There were no common opponents between them. Based on this, you would give the edge to Pongsai. Being in his home gym, you might give him even more of one. I don’t know enough about either frankly to tell you how they match up, which we all know styles make fights. I’ll just say, Pongsai by decision.   113 Aiden Bastian vs Mateo Sanchez Here we have a reversal of fortune. Bastian placed 8th at Reno while Sanchez did not place at all. Bastian finished 6-3. Sanchez went 2-2. There were no common opponents, nor did they wrestle each other. Just like 106, I’m calling this for Layton by decision.    120 Lander Bosh vs Dominic Bozanic Neither Bosh nor Bozanic placed at Reno in the 120 bracket. Bosh went 5-2 and made the bloodround. Bozanic went 3-2 and also reach the bloodround. Bosh had the unfortunate draw of CA state champion Ronnie Ramirez and then the runner up to Ramirez, Antonio Rodriguez. He held his own against Ramirez so you might think that could translate here. Bozanic is a possible state medalist this season so you may favor him, but I have to say it’s slight. Gilroy decision.   126 Geronimo Rivera vs Moses Mendoza Not only were these two in the 126 Reno bracket, they wrestled each other. Mendoza won that 7-5. It’s the sort of match up that 1) you get in a dual like this and 2) could go the other way this time. So we have Mendoza ranked at 120 and think he ends up there, which would then bring Isaiah Cortez down here. That’s a more solid Gilroy advantage but Rivera could pull that out as well. I think this is what we ultimately get and will be the highlight of the evening. Mendoza ranked in the top 20, Rivera in that top 25 to top 25 range. Gilroy decision.   132 Cole Fenwick vs Isaiah Cortez Layton has a state runner up, Logan Crowther who hasn’t wrestled yet but could be anywhere from 132 to 150, I have no idea. Fenwick himself finished 5th last year in Utah’s 6A division. I know CA fans will roll their eyes at states with more than one division. Either way, this should be one of the first big wins for the host Mustangs. Gilroy by fall.   138 Jace Lemons vs Elijah Cortez Lemons went 6-3 at Reno finishing 8th. Unfortunately for him, he kept running into kids from Los Gatos. They accounted for 2 of his 3 losses. The even bigger obstacle here is that Cortez is levels above them. I expect back to back falls for the Cornell committed twins. Gilroy by fall.   144 Noah Bull vs Moses Mirabal Like 126, we got to see this exact match at Reno. And like 126, it went to the Gilroy wrestler. But that couldn’t be much closer, it was 6-5 early in the event. Mirabal would go on to win the bracket, picking up a ranked win in the process. Bull would finish 4th with a forfeit. I think this is a coin flip, but we always give the nod to the home crowd and energy. Gilroy by decision.   150 Seth Apodaca vs Daniel Zepeda The biggest story out of Reno was Zepeda losing to Parco. I have to imagine that Zepeda will be fired up for this one.

2023 Powerade Preview: Weight By Weight

2023 Powerade Tournament Preview When you look at the teams in the field and the wrestlers heading to Canon Mac this weekend, I think it’s pretty fair to say this year’s Powerade will be the 2nd toughest tournament overall around the country. While Ironman is in a class by itself atop that list, some years the battle for that 2nd spot is won by Beast, Doc B, and this year it’s here at Powerade. Below, we have the top 8 seeds at each weight, where they’re ranked and then some thoughts about the top contenders. The names I’m most excited to see against some elite competition are Killian Colluccio, Cooper Hornack, Alex Nini, Shawn Taylor and Vaughn Spencer.  I’m also anxious to see if Logan Fowler proves me right lol. 107 Export XLSExport CSV Seed Rank Name School 1 8 (113) Dominic Deputy Chestnut Ridge 2 2 Cameron Sontz Delbarton-NJ 3 3 Shamus Regan Wyoming Seminary 4 8 Killian Colluccio Christian Brothers Acad.-NJ 5 11 Anthony Mason Southern Regional-NJ 6 20 Alex Diaz Council Rock North 7 NR Cam Baker Burrell 8 10 Timmy Mazur St. Edward-OH There’s a few things to watch at 107 this weekend. Deputy is a returning PA state finalist who actually owns the last domestic loss for Joe Bachmann. He’s definitely formidable, but we had him at the next weight up. Looks like he’s dropping down to 107 and we’ll see what that has in store for him. Sontz and Regan are embroiled a nice back and forth. It’s crazy what some of these kids take on for a season schedule but you have Regan who has already wrestled the top kid in the country 3 times and now he should get to see Sontz for the 3rd time already. Unlike the 3 against Bachmann, he has a win over Sontz. Sontz just avenged that last week in Oklahoma. I think Regan gets him back but that is finals level quality right there. Something I’m really curious to see is the two New Jersey kids in the middle of the top 8 seeds. I have them both right at that top 10 level and in the case of Mason, all alone on a ledge. I think that should be a great one that might be slipping a little under the radar outside the Garden State. The way this seeding worked out, Deputy actually has about as tough a quarterfinals as any top seed. He could get upended there by Mazur who was hot for Ironman and might be riding high. In the end, I think Regan comes away the champion but I got Colluccio as his {somewhat} surprising finals opponent.  Some unseeded kids to watch: #18 Tanner Tran and Chazz Robinson. They could each “upset” someone. Quarterfinals: Deputy vs Mazur Colluccio vs Mason Sontz v Baker Regan vs Diaz Semifinals: Deputy vs Colluccio Sontz vs Regan Finals: Colluccio vs Regan Champion: Shamus Regan (Wyoming Seminary) 114 Export XLSExport CSV Seed Rank Name School 1 3 Davis Motyka Wyoming Seminary 2 4 Ayden Smith Notre Dame GP 3 1 Paul Kenny Christian Brothers Acad.-NJ 4 NR Ethan Timar St. Edward-OH 5 10 (120) Ladon Sidun Norwin 6 NR Liam Davis Lake Highland Prep-FL 7 NR Tyler Conroy Malvern Prep 8 24 Jon McGinty St. Joseph Regional-NJ I got some push back a couple weeks ago when I had Paul Kenny at #1 to start the season even though New Jersey starts later than most states and he hadn’t yet taken the mat at 113. I felt pretty good about that decision then and I feel just as good about it now. He’s seeded 3rd here, not quite sure why, but he’s the favorite no matter where he is. The two seeded ahead of him, Motyka and Smith, are both seniors and I always point that out in these lower weights where physical maturity can override natural talent. If Smith gets past Kenny in the semis, that could set up a rematch with Motyka. As we sit right now, that is 1-0 for the Sem Blue Knight. Timar has spent time in the top 25 and could very well be the semis opponent for Motyka. However, I think Sidun at the 5 seed should get the job done in that one. Of the 6, 7, and 8, McGinty is a New Jersey state champion and might make that quarterfinal with Motyka interesting.  A name to watch outside of the ranked group is Nate Braun from Bergen Catholic. He had a great run in Atlantic City last season and could be a “surprise” quarterfinalist or more. Since he’s unseeded there’s no telling what his path looks like.   Quarterfinals: Motyka vs McGinty Timar vs Sidun Smith vs Conroy Kenny vs Davis Semifinals: Motyka vs Sidun Smith vs Kenny Finals: Motyka vs Kenny Champion: Paul Kenny (Christian Brothers) 121 Export XLSExport CSV Seed Rank Name School 1 4 Nate Desmond Wyoming Seminary 2 7 Dan Jones Delbarton-NJ 3 13 Karson Brown St. Edward-OH 4 8 Ethan Rivera Lake Highland Prep-FL 5 9 Louie Gill Reynolds 6 11 Lukas Littleton Mascaro Malvern Prep 7 NR Ty Kapusta Franklin Regional 8 NR Connor Smith Seneca Valley The biggest news, or story, here is Desmond committing to Penn State. I don’t know, I think I’ve heard of it. We can look ahead to some possible DeLuca Desmond matches in the Big 10. For now, I like to consider what sort of excitement or extra energy a kid might have coming off a huge decision like that. In the case of Desmond, he’s already the favorite to win this bracket. Now, it seems even less likely he slips up.  The battle for 2nd and 3rd should be great here. I mean who knows, maybe someone trips Desmond up too, these are all very good wrestlers coming in. But the most recent results do give a lot of support for Desmond’s place atop the bracket. He just beat Jones who just beat Rivera.

2023 NWHOF Dual Classic Recap: New Jersey

NWHOF New Jersey Recap Delbarton – 4th Place (3-2) Delbarton was one of the nation’s best a season ago and come into this season again among the nation’s top 10. The difference I suppose is that they were the top ranked New Jersey school until a loss to St Joe’s Regional late last Winter. This season, SJR enters slightly ahead of them in the Mat Scouts Fab 50, 7th to 9th. While they return a lot, they do lose two state champions in Tyler Vazquez and Simon Ruiz.  Still on the squad are a pair of state champions, Alessio Perentin and Louie Cerchio. And then a slew of placers and hopefuls. Newcomer Cam Sontz is one of the nation’s best at 106. He’s our top ranked from the state, but New Jersey should be pretty strong at that weight so we’ll see how it plays out. So, coming to the HOF Duals, they were the favorite to win Pool D. A group that included Colorado power Pomona, one of Illinois best teams in Joliet Catholic (in the state of Illinois competing at the 3A level for the first time in school history), and perennial top 10 team Lake Highland Prep. And they took care of business in pool action, finishing 3-0 and earning a spot in the GOLD bracket on day 2.  While their closest result in day was still +29 points, day 2 would present a whole different set of challenges. They faced #1 in the country Wyoming Seminary in the semifinals and then #5 Poway from California.  The dual with Sem was definitely highly anticipated, even though they have a dual with them coming up later this season. Buchanan and Clovis also have a dual against each other so they were separated on day 2, even though Clovis earned a spot in the SILVER bracket. I mention that only to say I thought maybe Sem and Delbarton would ask for the same thing. They didn’t, so I’d say we got a fair preview of what’s to come later. However, like most previews, it wasn’t the complete story. Delbarton was without Sophomore Jayden James and Sem was similarly without Vince Bouzakis and Joe Sealey.  We still got 3 highly anticipated nationally ranked match ups. At 106, Shamus Regan vs Cam Sontz. At 120, Nate Desmond vs Dan Jones. And at 175, Dom Federici vs Louie Cerchio. Interestingly enough, only the 120 result fell to the higher ranked wrestler. Sontz was able to avenge an earlier loss to Regan and Federici pulled off a nice “upset” in an OT thriller. No telling how these go in round 2. One of the more intriguing individual matches will be Sealey vs Perentin at 165. We didn’t get that this time, but should in January. All in all, I think there’s some good things from this one to take away for the Green Wave. In particular performances from Ryan DeGeorge at 126 and Gabe Logan at 150. They went a combined 9-1 and could be ready for that 2nd dual where they are expected to face Luke Lilledahl and Bouzakis respectively. Big Sem favorites going in but perhaps they’ll build off this and shock the world. You can see all the box scores below! 2023 NWHOF Dual Classic Recap: California

NWHOF California Recap Poway – 3rd Place (4-1) Poway came to the HOF duals leading a trio of CA schools that included Clovis city rivals Buchanan and Clovis. Because there were 2 prep schools among the 16 teams, the CA schools would need to be separated from them in day 1 pool action and then day 2 would be determined by performance and then adjusted accordingly if scheduled to face one of the prep schools. This meant that on day 1, 2 of the 3 CA schools would be in pool action together, and it was Poway and Clovis. So when it comes to CA relevance in terms of ranking and perhaps seeding for Doc B, or state, or wherever the two schools are competing again, that dual might be the most interesting to some of you.  As for the two day event, Poway controlled the pool action, never really being completely tested. Stillwater did the best against the Titans when looking at matches won. However, they still won that one 9-5 and by the same 21 points that they beat Clovis. Obviously, scoring in duals is different than a tournament like state, but looking at the Poway lineup this week, and knowing who else they add in a couple weeks, it’s definitely going to be one of the most contentious team state titles in a long time. 2 of Poway’s 3 heaviest hitters went 5-0. The other one, Angelo Posada, wasn’t here. The most surprising performance was Mario Carini. Not even guaranteed a starting spot, he held his own admirably against some of the nation’s best. He finished 4-1. In the end, Poway would make it to the GOLD pool, where they were slotted with Wyoming Seminary (Pool A), Edmond North (Pool B), and Delbarton (Pool D). Because of the CIF rule against prep school competition, if Poway beat Edmond North or lost to them, they would wrestle Delbarton after. As it turns out, that dual with Edmond North was one of the best of the two days. It came down to criteria (i). Which would go to Edmond North. In the 3rd place match, they got a few forfeits from Delbarton, and rode those 18 points to a 19 point win. The wrestled matches went 6-5 to Poway. Here we have the box scores from all 5 duals and the record of the kids in their lineup for the event. 2023 NWHOF Dual Classic Day 1: Ranked Matches

NWHOF Ranked Wrestlers Update Day 1 is done. And as we would expect, there were quite a few notable individual matches throughout. There were some surprises, like Jude Correa bumping up to HWT and needing OT to beat Kruz Goff of Blackwell, OK. But there weren’t any big upsets. There were 10 matches between guys we had in the top 25 entering the event. You can see the results of those below. 2023 NWHOF Dual Classic Wrestling Preview

2023 National Wrestling Hall Of Fame Dual Classic The National Wrestling HOF Duals are back this week. There’s 16 schools divided into 4 pools of 4 teams. Each team will wrestle the other 3 teams in their pool. Then based on how they finish in pool action they will be sent into a bracket competition. The only hiccup could be if and when Sem or Lake Highland would be set to face any of the 3 California schools. In which case, they will adjust the match ups. While I currently don’t do team rankings (perhaps that’s the next evolution for me), 13 of the 16 teams are ranked in the Mat Scouts top 50. We have the projected line ups listed below in easy to read tables. You can see who is nationally ranked and why a team like Sem, with 11 of 14 weights ranked, is such a massive favorite.  Should be some great action over the two days. Streaming will be on Mat Scouts Rokfin channel. https://rokfin.com/MatScouts Pool A Sem should dominate this one. They have 9 guys favored to go 3-0. And among the rest, a couple who could definitely do that as well.  As for individual matches, Gage Walker vs Matt Botello and Ishmael Guerrero vs Anthony Evanitsky are the two that stand out. Perhaps for the Sem vs Perry dual, we see Correa bump up vs Fockler. That would be a good one. For Bixby, Roller has been out, not sure that he’s expected to be here or not. If so, might be too soon to bump up for Bouzakis, but that would be a classic if both fully healthy. The biggest test should come from Buchanan. They’re a perennial top 10 team, spending many years in the top 5 or even the top 3. Because the state is way out west and CA schools can’t compete at the bigger tournaments with prep schools anymore, their talent can get overlooked. Woodward isn’t ranked at 106 but could definitely go 3-0. Bauder just fell out of our rankings but could push Hollingsworth. Toscano could do likewise with Schneider.  I think Tuttle vs St Peter’s will be a stellar dual as well. Stillwater and Poway both have 5 nationally ranked wrestlers, and we could get a match up between them at 113. Outside of that, it could come down to the fact that the remaining ranked guys for Stillwater might get pushed a little more than the remaining ranked guys for Poway. Meaning, it could be determined by a couple matches by major vs decision or pin vs major.  Aside from Sierra vs Thomas at 113, the best match here could be at 126 with JJ McComas vs Nikade Zinkin. If Rios is competing this week, don’t let the unranked fool you, he’s probably a top 15 national talent, maybe higher. He just hasn’t been heard from for awhile. CA Ranked Wrestlers Weekend Update Dec. 17

CA Ranked Wrestlers Update Buchanan and Clovis were at Zinkin. Gilroy and SJB were at Reno. Poway A team was not in action. The rest were scattered. Here’s a look at how they did. Of course most of these events don’t involve other nationally ranked wrestlers, so only their tournament finish is listed. The headliner result for the state of CA would have to be EJ Parco over Daniel Zepeda in the Reno semifinals. When I mention “key results” it is specific to CA vs CA wrestlers who are either nationally ranked or on the cusp of it. These results and more factor into the next rankings coming this week. I included the full list of current nationally ranked wrestlers from CA. If you know a result for someone that I missed, let me know, I’ll add it. 113 #13 Rocklin Zinkin (Buchanan) – Zinkin Classic Champion #15 Abram Cline (Granite Hills) – El Cajon Champion 120 #8 Ronnie Ramirez (Walnut) – Reno TOC Champion #15 Moses Mendoza (Gilroy) – Reno TOC 2nd Place (126) #24 Antonio Rodriguez (Los Gatos) – Reno TOC 3rd Place Key Result: Ramirez over Rodriguez (6-1) Key Result: Ramirez over Carrillo (3-2) 126 #4 Isaiah Cortez (Gilroy) – Reno TOC Champion #14 Isaiah Quintero (El Dorado) – Ed Springs Champion #24 Michael Romero (SJB) – Reno TOC 5th Place 132 #5 Elijah Cortez (Gilroy) – Reno TOC Champion Key Result: Cortez over Gutierrez (6-5) 138 #24 Gavin Bauder (Buchanan) – Zinkin Classic 2nd Place Key Result: Simmons over Bauder (3-2) 144 #21 Joe Toscano (Buchanan) – Zinkin Classic Champion 150 #2 Daniel Zepeda (Gilroy) – Reno TOC 3rd Place #11 Grigor Cholakyan (SJB) – Reno TOC Champion (157) #14 EJ Parco (Los Gatos) – Reno TOC 2nd Place Key Result: Parco over Zepeda (6-4) 157 #6 Leo Contino (Buchanan) – Zinkin Classic Champion 165 #9 Collin Guffey (Granite Hills) – El Cajon Champion 190 Thomas Sandoval (Vacaville) – Reno TOC Champion 285 Nick Sahakian (SJB) – Reno TOC Champion  Complete List Of CA Nationally Ranked Wrestlers: 113 #13 Rocklin Zinkin (Buchanan) #14 Abram Cline (Granite Hills) #19 Edwin Sierra (Poway) #23 Henry Aslikyan (Birmingham) 120 #8 Ronnie Ramirez (Walnut) #16 Moses Mendoza (Gilroy) #24 Antonio Rodriguez (Los Gatos) 126 #4 Isaiah Cortez (Gilroy) #14 Isaiah Quintero (El Dorado) #24 Michael Romero (St John Bosco) 132 #5 Elijah Cortez (Gilroy) 138 #2 Paul Kelly (Poway) #24 Gavin Bauder (Buchanan) 144 #21 Joseph Toscano (Buchanan) 150 #1 Brock Mantanona (Palm Desert) #2 Daniel Zepeda (Gilroy) #8 Miguel Estrada (Frontier) #11 Laird Root (Poway) #12 Grigor Cholakyan (St John Bosco) #14 EJ Parco (Los Gatos) 157 #3 Joseph Antonio (St John Bosco) #6 Leo Contino (Buchanan) #14 Andrew Barbosa (Palm Desert) 165 #9 Collin Guffey (Granite Hills) #22 Adrien Reyes (Clovis) 175 #14 Angelo Posada (Poway) 190 #6 Sonny Kling (Canyon Springs) #16 Eugenio Franco (Corona Del Mar) #17 Thomas Sandoval (Vacaville) #20 Diego Costa (Palm Desert) 215 #1 Cody Merrill (Gilroy) #13 Robert Platt (Poway) 285 #8 Nick Sahakian (St John Bosco) #17 Coby Merrill (JW North)

National High School Ranked Wrestler Weekend Roundup 12/15

Nationally Ranked Wrestlers Weekend Recap As I plan to update rankings after every big weekend, I thought it would be good to share the results from events around the country. Some guys didn’t compete where their team did. In those cases, I left the event blank.  There are quite a few weight changes that will be reflected in the next rankings update as well. But here, they are grouped where we had them last week. A couple events I couldn’t find specific match results for. If you see an error or know of a result, let me know. 106 Name School Event Result Notable Wins Notable Losses Joe Bachmann Faith Christian Beast 1st Place Sontz Shamus Regan Wyoming Seminary – Ignacio Villasenor Pomona – Rocco Hayes Sandburg Whitlatch 3rd Place Noble Ezekiel Witt Junction City – Rocco Cassioppi Honenegah Dvorak 1st Place Caleb Noble Waukegan Whilatch 1st Place Hayes Vincenzo Anello Blair Beast 3rd Place McGettigan Tyler Harper Norwalk Waterloo 6-0 Wyatt Lees Detroit Central Catholic Roughneck Duals 9-1 Burnett Cameron Sontz Delbarton Beast 2nd Place Bachmann Killian Colluccio Christian Brothers Ron Mazzola 1st Place Liam McGettigan Gilman Beast 4th Place Anello Allen Woo Montini – Timmy Mazur St Edward LaSalle Quad unknown Luke Green Aurora Solon 3rd Place B.
