Nuthin But A G Thang: Alex Gutierrez
Flip Through To Read Story: Full Text: It doesn’t take a genius (heck, even I could draw these parallels) to equate wrestlers to warriors and wrestling to a battle. A battle of wits. A battle of wills. A battle of ultimate want to. And for those who really do want to win any battle, they’d be wise to heed the words of legendary strategist Sun Tzu, “Every battle is won before it is fought.” Words that sound great – amazing even – to win, before any fighting actually takes place. But to turn such a dream to reality… well, it doesn’t just happen. It’s not accidental. And it’s not magic. In fact, I’d say there’s a pretty clear path to setting oneself up for the sort of victory Tzu espoused lo these many centuries. A path that I’ve identified as having a few key steps, but no shortcuts. You can cheat yourself, but you can’t cheat the process. And what is that process exactly? Purpose. Preparation. Persistence. Simon Sinek made perhaps the most popular case for the importance of identifying one’s purpose and the role it plays in success. He referred to it as the “why” but you can call it whatever you want. The idea, of course, is that it is the underlying reason you, me, and we do anything. We all have finite time to work with and a need to figure out exactly how we spend that time we have. And the driving force behind that figuring out is the why, or the purpose. And it’s undeniable that having a clear purpose is important. It sets the compass, pointing you in the right direction. But it’s not enough. Not by a long shot. Every journey requires preparation. Even a trip to the grocery store usually entails a car that needs gas, an awareness of the weather outside, and things like traffic at a specific hour. Easy preparation, admittedly, but preparation nonetheless. Something a little more daunting, like say, scaling Mount Everest, requires even more precise and arduous preparation. And then something like achieving wrestling greatness might fall somewhere between those two endeavors, but no doubt requires its own preparation. A sharpening of the mind, body, and spirit are all necessary along this journey. And each of these aspects requires its own regimen and its diligence to reach optimum output or performance. And then, with all that being established and set, you have to have the mindset, the discipline, to stay the course. Because the cliché about god laughing at your plans is a cliché for a reason… almost nothing goes according to plan. But that doesn’t mean planning and preparation are therefore useless, quite the contrary. The more comfortable you are in the uncomfortable, the more scenarios you have accounted for and put yourself through, the more adaptable to those changes you become. The inability for us to ever fully control external variables around us only makes preparation tantamount. So, when things start to arise against your plans, will you still see it through? We’d all like to believe so, but if the road to hell is paved with good intentions, the road to failure is paved with hopes and dreams. It takes more. And in this sport, it takes all you have. And then asks for more. And not everyone is built for it, and that’s fine. But for those few who are, we cheer them on and celebrate their greatness. But you’ll notice that as we talk about the things needed to chase greatness on the mat, and greatness off it, what isn’t necessary, and what can often be detrimental to it, is being loud about it. Boasting. Arrogant. Drawing unnecessary attention. What did we learn from Lil Wayne a little over 10 years ago? Real. G’s. Move. In. Silence. And while G literally means ‘gangster’, what it means to be gangster transcends any and every lifestyle and pursuit. A real G knows what they want and goes after it. A real G doesn’t let anyone get in the way of their mission. A real G puts in work. Work that goes unnoticed, unpublished, and uncelebrated. NBA star Damian Lillard also has a quote along these lines, “if you want to look good in front of thousands, you have to outwork thousands in front of nobody.” Real. G’s. Move. In. Silence. Like lasagna, and like Alex Gutierrez. The Central Catholic sophomore has spent the better part of his early career under the radar and overlooked. But he’s been working, moving, behind the scenes, with one goal in mind: wrestling greatness. And he’s had the season so far to set himself up for it. This weekend he stands at the threshold of CA wrestling immortality. A state championship. A chance to prove that greatness can come from anywhere, anyone. If they really want it. He really wants it. It’s his why. And it’s here now. He’s here now. Prepared. Whether you heard him coming or not. I was able to speak with Alex briefly and learn a little more about the top seed at 132 pounds this weekend in Bakersfield. So, I ask everyone, describe your start in the sport? Sometimes it’s a deep family history and sometimes it’s like you’re the first in your family to wrestle. It’s not a deep family history, but my older brother was in it first and then I followed. And I was scared. But I learned quickly that I had to adapt and get tougher and over some years I was able to do that. And did you feel pressure to succeed early on? Not really, it was just something for us to do, to keep us busy. As I got more success and showed some potential then it was like ok we have to keep this going. So the pushing for more came once there was some success. I’d say when I got 3rd at Reno Worlds. So, you compete for Central Catholic in Modesto, but I
Todd’s Talks With Santino Sloboda: “Don’t Sleep On Me”
“Don’t Sleep On Me, I Got Big Plans.” -Elizabeth Folakemi Santino Sloboda is a name Pa wrestling fans already know. It’s a name a lot of folks know nationally. He’s an insanely accomplished wrestler in a state that most will acknowledge is the best in the country. Sloboda’s wrestling career started at five years old. He was a highly energetic child and needed an outlet. Wrestling was the perfect sport for him. Santino stated, “I played a lot of sports as a kid, I settled on wrestling in seventh grade.” He found success throughout his youth wrestling career. Santino placed six times in the Pennsylvania Junior State Tournament, a runner up twice. In Pa, that’s a big deal. This was a building block for Santino. He worked hard, big plans, don’t sleep on this guy. He took his talents to the Quest Wrestling Club. Along with his school coaches, Sloboda developed a style and pace that would shoot him to the top of the PA State rankings in high school. He credits coach Jim Akerly and practice partners, Luke Willochell (Greater Latrobe) and Antonio Boni (Central Valley) among others for the gains he has made in high school. Iron sharpens iron. It’s a common phrase in wrestling. It’s common because it’s true. The best seek the best coaches and the best partners. It’s an attitude that elite competitors just have. Santino would turn his freshman year into a great one. He finished with a record of 40-3, finishing 4th in the state. That wasn’t good enough for him. He wasn’t getting slept on, he wasn’t done. Santino continued to work, he credits his team and coaches for pushing him even further. He worked relentlessly. He bumped around weights to find the best competition. “Some guys are good with wins, I want wins over the best guys. If I lose, it happens, but I want the best competition.” That’s Santino’s mindset. He’s a competitor, a winner, a guy that constantly wants to get better. PA, don’t sleep on this guy. Hell, the country shouldn’t sleep on this guy. He’s dangerous, the perfect mix of skills and mindset. He’s got a great support system that he credits for keeping him grounded. “ I owe so much to my family, they support me so much through rough times. They are always there for me, that’s a comforting feeling knowing I can always turn to them.” When asked what the WPIAL means to him, Sloboda acknowledged that he realizes that he wrestles in arguably the best region in the country. “It’s definitely a nice prep for other tournaments and even club duals. I wrestle some of the best guys in the country every week.” It’s definitely a benchmark, if you’re a top guy in the WPIAL, you’re usually a top guy in the country. Look at the success within the region. It speaks for itself. He hopes to be a name that someday people talk about long after his high career has ended. Sloboda stated that he doesn’t have a particular college in mind yet. As a guy that will likely finish high school with 140 plus wins, colleges better come ready to get this guy. He’s a dude that any university would cherish, mature beyond his years, well spoken, hard worker. He has big plans. Saying Santino will be a huge addition to any college room is an understatement, he’s a winner that will bring that mentality to any team. Get him early, acknowledge how hard he works and what an asset he’ll be to your program. You won’t regret it. Don’t sleep on this guy. The scariest thing about Santino Sloboda is the fact that he has two more years left in high school. He hasn’t even peaked yet. Buy his stock now, sit back and collect all the gains he’ll make you. Get used to the name. He’s a guy. What’s even better than his wrestling ability is the person that he is. Humble, intelligent, hard working. He’s a young man that instantly makes any program better. Don’t sleep on him, he has big plans. Sloboda’s sophomore post season run starts this weekend. Follow it, you won’t be disappointed. Watch him when he makes his return to the Giant Center in Hershey. Big things are definitely coming out of this Butler High School student athlete. I suggest you not sleep on this man, he’s got big plans for the future. Pablo’s Blue Ribbon Wrestling Previews: CA State Finals Preview
PABLO’S BLUE RIBBON CA STATE PREVIEW By Pablo Di Maria With over 800 programs in the Golden State and 560 wrestlers competing this week, the single-division state tournament is considered by many as the toughest in the country. The 14-weight-class field is as diverse as the state itself and only the most mentally and physically will survive the double-elimination challenge to earn one of the 112 state medals. Mechanics Bank Arena welcomes this exclusive group that has survived the grind of the state qualifier tournaments. Wrestlers will vie for individual glory, but several programs are looking for the team state title. In the race are the following teams. #1 Poway (San Diego) 2023 State finish: 2nd The Mean Green Machine is in a position to win their fifth-team state title in school history. They won their first state title in 1986, and then won team titles in 1999, and 2005, and the last state title came in 2009. With all 14 wrestlers advancing to the CIF state tournament, Poway could emerge as team state champions on Saturday evening. Potential finalists include Arseni Kikiniou (106), Edwin Sierra (113), Paul Kelly (138), Angelo Posada (175), and Robert Platt at 215-pounds. Also expected to help win the state title include Billy Townson (126), Elias Navida (132), Mario Carini (144), Laird Root (150), and Adam Farha (285). If Poway does win the team title, it would be the first under the tutelage of coach John Meyers. #2 Buchanan (Central) 2023 State finish: 1st No other team in California history has owned the state tournament like Buchanan High has in the last seven seasons. Buchanan will be going for an unprecedented eighth consecutive CIF state team title on Saturday evening. Coach Troy Tirapelle and staff have the numbers to do so as they also qualified all 14 members of the varsity squad. Team leaders looking for an individual state title are Blake Woodward (106), Rocklin Zinkin (113), Gavin Bauder (138), Joseph Toscano (144), Branson John (175), and Bryson Harrington (285). Additional support should also come from Chris Huerta (120), Ashton Besmer (126), Jaxtyn Frost (150), and Alec Dansby (215). The Bears will need to get those bonus points early in the rounds to get the momentum going and win another team state title. #3 Gilroy (Central Coast) 2023 State finish: 3rd There was no team better than Gilroy High last weekend at the Central Coast Section tournament held by Watsonville High, as the Mustangs won their 21stconsecutive CCS championship, accumulated 331.5 points, and advanced 12 wrestlers to the big dance. During the 2017-2018 and 2019 seasons the Mustangs finished as team state runners-up. This weekend they have the potential to win a team state title with potential finalists Isaiah Cortez (126), Elijah Cortez (132), Daniel Zepeda (138), Moses Mirabal (144), and Cody Merrill (285). Those finalist points could be enough to get Gilroy over the mountain and get their first CIF state team title. The postseason is an entirely different beast and Gilroy will need all the help they can get from the rest of the team. #4 St. John Bosco (Southern) 2023 State finish: 7th When it comes to the Southern Section, St. John Bosco is a beast of a team having won the section tournament in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2023, and 2024. However, they have yet to win a team state title despite having such former athletes as Aaron Pico, Cade Olivas, Zahid, and Anthony Valencia. This season they qualified 11 wrestlers to the big show. They will need all the support they can from the entire squad. However, they’ll be led by Sean Willcox (113), Nathan Carrillo (120), Jesse Grajeda (132), Grigor Cholakyan (157), Joseph Antonio (165), and Nicholas Sahakian (285) who could pick up those clutch wins to help Bosco win a team state title. #5 Clovis (Central) 2023 State finish: 4th Clovis High is one of the winningest programs in the Golden State. Year after year they produce great teams and individuals. This year is no exception as they qualified 13 grapplers for the big dance. Coach Gabriel Schaeffer and the staff will need all the help they can get from the entire team to win a 14th state team title. Leaders for the Cougars are Anthony Garza (106), Thunder Lewis (113), Nikade Zinkin (126), Noah Reynolds (150), Adrien Reyes (165), and Joe Buck (175). 106lbs Returning medalist Zack Hoover (Laguna Creek) 2023 8th Multiple All-Americans in Freestyle, Greco, Folkstyle, and NHSCA, make this weight class a fun one to watch. 2024 San Diego Section champion Arseni Kikiniou (Poway) looks to be the odds-on-favorite, but the Central Section is very deep in this weight class, and they will have something to say about the results on Saturday night. Anthony Garza (Clovis) overturned the results from two weeks ago as he defeated then No. 2 Blake Woodward (Buchanan) 2-0 with a clutch takedown in the first period. We could see a sixth match occurring in the semifinals this week. A freshman making weights is Central Coast Section champion Aiden Garcia (Palma). Garcia’s lone blemish on the season was at the Christopher Bert Mar Invitational where he bumped up a weight class and lost in the finals. The lone returning state medalist from this weight class is Zack Hoover (Laguna Creek). After winning the Sac-Joaquin Section for the first time this past weekend, Hoover will be making his third trip to the state tournament. Keep an eye on double Pan-Am Champion Henry Aslikyan (Birmingham) who hopes to become the second-ever state champion from the Los Angeles City Section this weekend. The Southern Section will also have a say regarding medal distribution. Leading the contingent are gold and blue champions Hunter Jauregui (Fountain Valley) and Caine Martin (Camarillo). Can’t forget about runner-up Marcus Tolentino (Northview). Others vying for a spot on the podium include San Diego Section runner-up Emilio Escobar (Granite Hills), Sac-Joaquin Section runner-up Nathaniel Granados (Merced), and North Coast Section Champion Connor Jeong (Castro Valley High School). 113lbs Returning medalist
