In recent years, you saw the last name Blaze, you knew you had a possible champion. But there’s no Joey and there’s no Marcus. That leaves Omar Ayoub as the sole returning Super 32 medalist. And he will have his hands full attempting to repeat that performance. He does come in as a top 4 seed, so the odds may be ever in his favor. Although Ayoub does have that past placement, it’s actually probably between freshman Grey Burnett of Perrysburg and Ethan Birden of Dublin Coffman with the best chances to come away with the S32 belt. Burnett is top 3 in the country at 106, Birden is the top seed at 165. Following those two is a kid from Wadsworth named Jax Joy worth your attention. He’s been impressive every time I’ve seen him. Hard to call Javaan Yarbrough a dark horse but that’s what the Copley state champion is, coming in without even a top 20 seed. BACK TO HUB

With Sealey out, the slack as it were will be picked up by Sebastian DeGannaro who has a top 3 finish to his name and a consistent spot in the national top 10-15. Some other names to keep an eye on, Claudio Torres, Elvis Solis, and Christian Fretwell. Torres probably carries the highest pedigree of the three but Solis and Fretwell are names I’ve seen acquitting themselves well through the off-season. BACK TO HUB

There’s a returning champion in Ben Davino. A returning finalist in Seth Mendoza. And Davino’s teammate, Dom Munaretto, who has a 6th place finish to his credit. All 3 should be right back where they were, and in the case of Mendoza and Munaretto, maybe improving on their position. As for the rest of the state kids, I’m intrigued by Rocco Hayes and Nick Garcia to see if they’re ready to make leaps this season. Interestingly enough, Hayes isn’t even the only Illinois 106 named Rocco. Cassioppi has been doing extremely well this Summer season and might be poised for a run here. 106 is deep with 6 of the top 7 in the bracket. I’ll have a more in-depth preview for the state later. We know Anthony Knox is the top seed at 120. He’s a past Super 32 champion, a 2-time NJ state champion, and last year’s runner-up here at 113. Yet, he’s not in this table because when you sort by state, he disappears but when you sort by Super 32 finish, he shows up. Anyway, he’s clearly the leader of the Garden State contingent heading south next week. His top challenger figures to be last year’s 106 champ, Christian Castillo. After Knox, there’s a lot of talent from this state who should be highly competitive and in the title mix. Delbarton High alone has the 2 seed at 165 and the top seed at 175. That’s Alessio Perentin and Louie Cerchio respectively. State champ Henrich is certainly a top contender but the top of 157 is as studly as it gets. He should still fair well. Most people know Harvey Ludington and how dominant he can be, he’ll have a chance to announce himself even louder against the 190 field that is premier. And finally, we always have to mention the world champ Paul Kenny. A favorite to pick up state title #1 this season, he’s certainly expected to reach the finals. There’s not very many with past Super 32 success. In fact, only Nick Sahakian and Jesse Grajeda (both from St John Bosco) have placed previously. Sahakian is my most intriguing as he’s up at heavyweight and gets the top seed. I think he has a great chance to reach the finals but it’s set up for him to meet CA state champion, Daniel Herrera, in the semis (Herrera now in Iowa). Grajeda is a freshman, one of the best in the state of CA and a live dog in the hunt but his weight might be the toughest of all of them, especially the top 3. We’re talking world champions, multiple Super 32 champions from last year. It’s a minefield out here. After them, I’m looking at Paul Kelly from Poway and Joe Toscano from Buchanan as party crashers. Now, Kelly is seeded to place. And he’s going to get plenty of chances to stake his claim nationally. Toscano is up a few weight classes. He’s been entering events at 150 and winning. He’s one of the quintessential overlooked CA kids when people talk about that. He’s settling into 138 here and I think could ultimately finish higher than Kelly. Perhaps they meet up. If the 16 seed holds up, he’ll get the top seed, Landon Robideau early. That’s a huge test. One of the deepest weights in the state is 150 and we see some of that here. Estrada and Parco both have a chance to finish on the podium. If you want a way off the radar dark horse, Brokton Borelli is that guy. Kyle Snyder. Aaron Brooks. Meyer Shapiro. And there are some in this mix that should finish the weekend with a winning record, possibly placing and maybe more. Leading the way is St Mary’s Ryken senior Mekhi Neal. He’s spent the last month running into a PA state champ and top 15 kid, and beating him multiple times. He’s always tough and I think the best pound for pound in the state. His biggest issue here is that his weight has two world medalists and #1 in the country Joe Sealey. Sealey has been upset at big events before, including last year’s Super 32, but when he’s on, he’s really impossible to beat at this level. After Neal, I’d probably go with Garvin as the next biggest challenger in his weight. Coming out of the Stellar Trained room, the Rising Sun senior was a strong competitor last year making a quarterfinals run before falling to Seth Mendoza and ultimately not placing. It could be a similar run this year, perhaps it’s even better. He will be vying for another state title next March before heading down to College Park and the Terps, but before then I’m sure he’d love to show out in Greensboro. Next on our radar are Gaels teammates from Mount St Joseph, Carter Nogle at 132 and Bryce Phillips at 215. Long shots to place, I think 3-2 or 4-2 tournament performances would be more than respectable. In terms of possible darkhorses and athletes who could pull an upset or two, Judah Aybar is the one left to mention. I’d say everyone else is fighting a real steep uphill battle but crazier things have happened and my forecasting is certainly not cemented. Hope everyone on this list does what they set out to do and considers it a worthy weekend of tough competition.
