2023 Super 32: Illinois Preview

2023 Illinois Super 32 Preview I feel like Illinois has brought more wrestlers out to NC in years past. Maybe that’s just perception because the state always has some of the most elite anywhere. And this year that’s also true, even if a few others like Kannon Webster and Sergio Lemley have moved on.  It also stands to reason the kids really serious about football, like Dillan Johnson for example, wouldn’t be making the trip either. Still, there are some very strong belt contenders and as always a few sleepers, if you can even call them that. {Seed; *Rank; Name; School; State; Grade} *Ranking = mine 106 Top Contenders:  7 8 Rocco Cassioppi Honenegah IL 9 5 10 Caleb Noble Waukegan IL 9 10 11 Rocco Hayes Sandberg IL 11 So, we have 3 Illinois kids ranked in the top 25 who will be in this bracket. It’s hard to say between 5 and 15 at any weight how much difference there really is. So while we have Rocco Hayes ranked the highest of this trio, they’re all quite close.  Hayes is the veteran of the group, a junior coming off a 3rd place finish in the state last season. Cassioppi has been perhaps the busiest of all this Summer, notably picking up a couple ranked wins at Elite 8. Noble might have the most upside and showed already at Fargo he’s no shrinking violet on the big stage. Quarterfinals: Noble is slated to meet Shamus Regan in the quarterfinals here. Regan himself is our #7 nationally and the 4 seed. As is the case with most potential match ups that would be stellar. Regan holds a recent 5-2 win over Noble at Tulsa this past Winter. But that was neck and neck the whole way. As the 7 and 10 seeds, the Rocco’s are slated to wrestle each other in the round of 16. I can’t find any recent history between them***, so if someone has that, feel free to share with me. For now, I have this as a toss up, not just on the journey to the Super 32 podium, but also for supremacy among kids named Rocco in Illinois. That might even mean more. The winner of this one would face Grey Burnett more than likely. He’s 2 seed and currently 3rd in the country. Gotta favor him but stranger things have happened for sure. Neither one would be terribly outmatched. Semifinals: Should Noble win his quarter, he’d get the winner of Joe Bachmann and Ezekiel Witt. Bachmann is expected to win that one and then would be favored over Noble, but not by as much as those outside Illinois might think. On the other side, a win over Burnett in the quarters would likely have a battle with Ignacio Villasenor in the semis. I mean that’s a rough stretch but that’s what Super 32 is all about. From the round of 16 on, you’re likely going to get stronger competition than you will in the state season, even the finals. Finals: Is there a universe out there where Noble and a Rocco make the Super 32 finals? I think so. A lot would have to go right of course. But upsets are only upsets based on rankings on paper. The wrestling happens out there, on the mat. And a kid like Noble could well be the best 106 in the country by season’s end. So I’m not predicting that but I’m saying these light weights have tons of chaos and almost always some super early surprise result. Conclusion/Prediction: With all three seeded in the top 10, the odds say one is almost locked into a medal here, with another being projected, and a 3rd not long off the odds either. The way I have them ranked, they’d be the 6, 7, and 9 seeds. It doesn’t get much closer than that, folks. And it could certainly be that as the 5 seed, the path for Noble opens up for him early.  Predicted order of finish: Noble, Cassioppi, Hayes  ***Turns out Cassioppi and Hayes met up just this past week in a 4-0 decision for Cassioppi. I think that deserves a slight change in the rankings coming in, and it’ll be Hayes with the possible chance at revenge here. 113 Top Contenders: 4 3 Dom Munaretto St Charles East IL 10 12 18 Nicholas Garcia  Marmion Academy IL 10 n/a n/a Bruno Cassioppi Honenegah IL 9 The top contender at this weight is none other than Dom Munaretto. I mean that much is clear. He’s our #3 in the country and enters as the 4 seed in this bracket.  Nick Garcia is also up from 106 and comes in solidly within the top 20 and a 12 seed. He finished 4th in the state as a freshman and should be a tough out for anyone. There’s nothing “other” about the other Cassioppi, unless you say Bruno is otherworldly. He’s every bit the equal of Rocco and might blow this whole bracket up. I have him ranked 14th at 106. But prior to this weekend, I’m taking a wait and see approach since he’s unseeded. Without knowing what line he’ll be sitting at in the bracket, I can’t really say who he might face in any round. Just know, he’s liable to beat everyone here, including the top seed Seidel. Quarterfinals: Should Munaretto do what we expect, he’ll run into Dru Ayala from Iowa. Of course Ayala is following in his brother Drake’s (now at Iowa) footsteps and will be a challenge. However, the St Charles East sophomore is the favorite here to make the semis. What’s interesting for Ayala is that as the 5 seed, to get to Munaretto in these quarters, he’ll have to go through Garcia in the round of 16. Which means to get to the quarters, Garcia will have to get through the 5 seed first. If he does, then it’s IL on IL violence with Munaretto. Semifinals: I like Munaretto

Beyond His Years: Todd’s Talks With Landon Sidun

Maturity is not measured by age. I mean sure, we expect that as people get older maturity comes with it. And many of us would say we are more mature as adults than we were as kids. I’d say it for myself. I expect you’d say it for yourself as well. But there’s also those kids we can remember growing up with who just seemed “mature beyond their years.” This isn’t a thesis about what that phrase means or anything, it is a concept at the heart of this story. Landon’s story. A story that we pick up now but that he’s been writing for years. It’s about attitude. It’s about experience. And while Landon may only be a freshman in high school this year, the opportunities he’s had to wrestle on some of the countries biggest stages has afforded him some invaluable experience. Turning him into one mature competitor. Landon began wrestling at 5 primarily because his dad and other close relatives competed in their youth. But around here that’s really just what you do. I remember learning in Wedding Crashers from Bradley Cooper that Maryland does crab cakes and football. Well, Bradley, the WPIAL does pierogies and wrestlin. That often means early struggles on the mat, and for Landon it wasn’t much different, “My dad coached me when I first started. I was decent. But I really didn’t start having a ton of success until middle school.”  Success that can be attributed to Landon’s work ethic. Cliches are cliches because they are usually true. And there’s one many of us in this sport know quite well, that hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. But what happens when you get talent and still work hard? You get rarified air. The kind that legends get to breathe while us mere mortals cheer them on, and it could very well be those are the heights Landon is headed to. But even hard work isn’t enough. Practice makes perfect, but you perform how you practice. So really it’s perfect practice that makes perfect. And you get more perfect practices, more iron-sharpening training, from partners with your same outlook on the sport, and Landon’s outlook is as mature as you’ll find in an incoming high schooler. So where has he honed his approach to the sport that has him ranked among the nation’s top 5 at 113, “I primarily went to Hutchy’s Hammers, which is a club that my dad started. I also went to Young Guns with Jody Strittmatter.” He also speaks highly of the Norwin program for whom he’ll be looking to wreak havoc on the PIAA for 4 years. “Coach Kyle Martin has so much knowledge that he passes on to us as a team.” Knowledge that has been given a turboboost of sorts through the Knights RTC, which allows Sidun to train a lot more freestyle. And it’s not just Coach Martin but 2009 NCAA champion Jarrod King gives the program a great foundation to build future success on. Success that comes from testing yourself against the best. Enter Super 32. To say that Landon Sidun has had a great middle school career would be a massive understatement. He’s a two-time Super 32 medalist, taking 4th and then 1st. He followed that up with a PA Jr High state title. And as he gears up for 2023-2024, he’s fresh off a Fargo Cadet title setting his sights on Greensboro, NC for what would would be his first Super 32 belt at the high school level. I don’t know how much you follow the NFL, but when Aaron Rodgers signed with the Jets he said their one Super Bowl trophy looked lonely. Perhaps that’s how the belt he won last year is feeling in the trophy case? So this weekend, Landon will be in the 113 field. A field that features world champions, state champions, and just overall lower weight hammers. But he’s one in his own right. Just as much as he’ll have a ton of obstacles to navigate through the bracket, they’ll have him as a similar obstacle as well. He comes in ranked #5 in the country by us and has a chance to even improve on that. And he’s not the type to shy away from great competition, to protect a record or ranking. He wants it. Wants the challenge. And he’ll find it here. Paul Kenny, #1 in the country and a 2023 world champion. Dom Munaretto, a world champion and Illinois state champion ranked 4th in the country. Aaron Seidel, a fellow Keystone State wrestler who has gone 2 for 2 in state titles to start his career and comes in with a 4 by his name. #7 Davis Moytka from Wyoming Seminary, #9 Dru Ayala of Fort Dodge, IA, and #10 JoJo Uhorchuk of Signal Mountain, TN round out the top 10 wrestlers in this bracket. Talk about loaded. So that outlook and mature mindset are the weapons Landon will rely on to reach those famed Super 32 finals – in front of the rabid crowd that sits mat side. “My goal is not to think about the match. It’s to go out and score as much and as fast as I can. That’s the mindset. If I keep doing that, the wins will come.”  Being from Western PA, having experience at national tournaments in the past, Sidun is prepared for the biggest of stages. The bigger the better. And he gets the biggest folkstyle challenge of the year this weekend. But this Young Gun will be ready. “Never let an opponent or a particular situation overwhelm you, remain calm and trust in what you’ve trained to do.”  Rapid Fire Questions: Ice Cream Favorite Guilty Pleasure Food? Dirt Bike Riding How Do You Like To Spend Your Down Time? Tahir Parkins Commits To Rutgers

Nazareth junior Tahir Parkins keeps the class of 2025 announcement train rolling. He recently went public with his commitment to Rutgers university.  He enters this season with a 61-10 record and comes off the heels of a 4th place finish in the state last March. He’ll be at Super 32 next week where he should maintain a top 15 ranking nationally. We currently have him #15 exactly and think th needle is indeed pointing up for this Blue Eagle. More PA Commitments

Aaron Seidel Commits To Virginia Tech

Northern Lebanon junior phenom, Aaron Seidel, made his college decision this week, ending the recruiting process and letting him settle into a final 2-year stretch run that should include two more PIAA state titles and a bevy of other gold medals, belts, and championship awards. He projects to 125 at the next level, a weight where the Hokies have had some success between Eddie Ventresca and Sam Latona. He’ll be counted on to build upon their success once he steps on campus in 2025. Chances are good he redshirts that first season and then begins the journey toward ACC and NCAA dominance. While Blacksburg is still years away, what is right here right now for Seidel, our #4 wrestler in the country at 113, is Super 32 and then a junior season where he settles in as the lead horse in the toughest state in the country.        More News

Then there’s national top 5 Dreshaun Ross with a chance to solidify his spot. And then there’s a slew of lower weights where Iowa is scattered throughout the top 20. The most interesting here might be freshman Dawson Youngblut. In any case, I expect some deep runs by multiple kids, with a couple causing a stir into the semis. BACK TO HUB

After PJ Duke, LaDarion Lockett could very well be the next best wrestler in any weight. Especially with Joe Sealey out of the event. He’s a world champion, a past Super 32 champion, and a big favorite now to do it again. He’ll be joined by a trio of Stillwater teammates, Aydan Thomas, JJ McComas, and Stockton Allen. Of the three, McComas enters with the highest seed and national ranking but Thomas has spent a good part of the last calendar year in the top 10 or even top 5 at 106. Up at 113, he’ll have a chance to prove he belongs there as well. Kody Routledge is the one non-Stillwater wrestler with a solid chance to crash the party.  I think Devon Miller is the best shot at a dark horse performing well. BACK TO HUB

With top seed Joe Sealey out at 157, it does open up the bracket a little. Still has some formidable opponents for sure, but that’s true for every bracket here.  If not Marines, perhaps it’s Grayson Fuchs at 113 or Wyatt Lees at 106. These lighter weights have a lot of chaos in them usually so maybe one of these two is the beneficiary.  If you said Justin Gates is one of the best pound for pound from Michigan this weekend, you wouldn’t get much protest from me, however, his weight is an absolute beast at the top so it’s a daunting task ahead. Like Gates, Chinavare is a Great Lakes State hammer but at 132, whooo, better him than me against that field. But, unseeded, he’s a definite live dark horse. BACK TO HUB
