2023 Walsh Ironman Preview: Weight By Weight

The 2023 Walsh Ironman Tournament Preview There is no question what the toughest in-season tournament is every year. It’s this one. Just like there is no question what the toughest preview for this tournament is every year. It’s this one. Let’s get to it. 106 Export XLSExport CSV Seed Rank Name School State 1 1 Joe Bachmann Faith Christian PA 2 2 Ignacio Villasenor Pomona CO 3 4 Shamus Regan Wyoming Seminary Preps 4 7 Caleb Noble Warren Township IL 5 8 Rocco Cassioppi Hononengah IL 6 12 Ayden Dodd Perrysburg OH 7 20 Vincenzo Anello Blair Preps 8 NR Brighton Karvoski Green Farms Preps This is basically all freshmen. I don’t know who was in line for 4 Ironman titles prior to Covid, but there are couple sophomores who won last year back again, and this entire group is eligible for that should they come out crowned the champion. The favorite has to be Bachmann. He’s one of the top 2, 3 freshmen in the country and has done nothing coming into the season to give us reason to think otherwise. Villasenor was supposed to be a big challenger at Super 32 but suffered an injury and forfeited out. Assuming he’s rested, recovered, and ready I think he poses a nice challenge here. Regan battled Bachmann in the Super 32 semis to 1-0. They just wrestled again in last week’s headlining dual. Bachmann came out 7-3 that time. So, we’d give the edge to Bachmann again but these kids are super familiar with each other so you never know. Noble had an impressive Spring and Summer heading into his first HS season. I think right now you make him a clear candidate to reach the podium but not quite the title contender of the top 3. Cassioppi, like Noble, has been everywhere it seems. He’s picked up big wins – Dodd at Super 32 for example – and taken some tough losses. No one is more battle-tested. We’ll see if that serves him well through the frontside or even to spur a top 3 consolation run. Dodd is joined his teammate, Grey Burnett (113), to make up one of the most formidable lower weight duos in the country. When Burnett was at 106, he was top 5. Dodd comes in just outside our top 10 but should do substantially better than last year’s 1-2 showing. This might be some folks’ first time catching Anello. He enters this season as a super heralded youth star. He should be a fixture in the Blair lineup for years. I would be surprised and impressed if he knocked off one of the top 3. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he beat anyone else. Darkhorse(s): I think we always see Ohio guys overperform. That might be someone like Lincoln Rohr of Massillon Perry. Most Interesting Round Of 16: Caleb Noble vs Mason Rohr Potential Quarterfinals: Bachmann vs Karvoski Noble vs Cassioppi Villasenor vs Anello Regan vs Dodd Semifinals: Bachmann vs Cassioppi Villasenor vs Regan Finals: Bachmann vs Villasenor Champion: Joe Bachmann (Faith Christian, PA) 113 Export XLSExport CSV Seed Rank Name School State 1 2 Dom Munaretto St Charles East IL 2 5 Ayden Smith Notre Dame Green Pond PA 3 12 Grey Burnett Perrysburg OH 4 25 Hunter Taylor Liberty MO 5 20 Ethan Timar St Edward OH 6 8 Davis Motyka Wyoming Seminary Preps 7 11 Nicholas Garcia Marmion Academy IL 8 23 Aydan Thomas Stillwater OK We didn’t have to wait long to find our first returning champion. Last year, Munaretto was a freshman at 106 and left the weekend with the gold. His toughest battle proved to be the semifinals match up with Smith. Ayden is a multi-time PIAA state champ and I’m sure would love that rematch, since it’s most likely to occur in the finals. Smith would ultimately take 3rd last year. As mentioned with Dodd at 106, Burnett is the freshman phenom of this bunch and could definitely shake things up (as much as you’d say a 3 seed shakes things up). He took a slight upset loss at Super 32 to Rocco Hayes and while Hayes isn’t here for any possible revenge, what better way to get back to national prominence than a deep Ironman run? I have him coming in ranked 12th at 113 but he’s certainly capable of making me look dumb there. Hunter Taylor gets the 4 seed and you won’t find him ranked by anyone nationally but me. So who is right? We shall see. He’s the elder statesman of the group, a senior committed to Oregon State. That could prove valuable in tough spots. Last year he finished 8th with 2 losses to Sebastian DeGennaro and a respectable loss at the hands of Marcus Blaze. There’s a couple Ohio kids that seem to fluctuate in other rankings, Timar is one of them. He finished 4th last year, ultimately losing to Smith in the consolation finals. He would go on to capture an Ohio D1 state title, that included a finals over Rylan Seacrist (seeded 9 here). Perhaps a bit of discrepancy between the 6 seeded Motyka and where I have him ranked among the group. As mentioned with Burnett, this could be the sort of match up Burnett ultimately wins. I just have to give a little credit to Motyka at this weight. Garcia has been a fast riser after a very impressive Super 32 performance. Last year at Ironman, Garcia took a big loss to Javaan Yarbrough and then to Motyka. He avenged Motyka as part of that Super 32 run. Perhaps they get a rubber match of sorts this weekend. Aydan Thomas has had some really high moments and some sort of head scratching losses over the last year. I believe at his best, he could probably take out anyone here but Munaretto. But it’s tough to predict that for him. Darkhorse(s): Kole Davidheiser is the highest ranked unseeded. Depending where he lines up, he could
2023 Dual Previews – Faith Christian Academy vs Wyoming Seminary

Faith Christian at Wyoming Seminary We’ve had some tournaments to look at but the season really gets started with the first major duals. Duals are the lifeblood of the sport from a spectator standpoint and I hope we continue to see that aspect of a team’s schedule feature big matches with competitive battles. While it’s difficult to envision anyone keeping a dual competitive with Sem this season, FCA has some very high caliber wrestlers that will make things interesting and provide what should be exciting moments. When we talk about the strength of Sem, we start with a line up that has 11 out of 14 starters ranked nationally. Then we look at some of the quality among those ranked. Where we find a couple world champions, Super 32 champions, and former PIAA champions making their prep debuts. To say the Blue Knights are loaded in 2023 is a massive understatement. So, it’s a daunting task ahead of FCA. One I’m sure that they’re excited for. And we as fans are excited as well. One of the great things about duals is to see the way coaches maneuver their line ups. Especially when you come in as a heavy underdog against a team like Sem, what does FCA do about it? We shall see. Sometimes there’s not much you can do. Unfortunately, one of their heavy hitters, Gauge Botero is out. He could have possibly lined up against Desmond at 120, giving FCA a real chance to flip that one. He could have taken on Lilledahl at 126, pulling a massive upset or at least keeping those team points down. Either way, he’s out so that’s one less nationally ranked match up we’ll get. Looking at the projected line ups, we’ll still get 5 nationally ranked battles: 106, 113, 165, 175, and with Correa up this week, 285. Based simply on the rankings, 106 is the headliner. Then you look at their 1-0 result at Super 32 and you think there’s a chance Regan flips this outcome here, in his home gym. I’m also interested to see how Weidemoyer bounces back after a tough loss to Asher Cunningham at The Surge with another battle against a top 20 opponent. And then the Adam Waters Dom Federici showdown at 175 should be great. 2023 Ironman Preview: Ranked Wrestlers By Weight
![](https://tkdwnmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/ironmanrankedbyweight-1024x576.png)
2023 Ironman Ranked Wrestlers by Weight We keep building toward the best in-season tournament of the year. We looked at the ranked wrestlers per school yesterday. You can check that out here: https://tkdwnmedia.com/2023-walsh-ironman-preview-all-ranked-wrestlers/ Now, we have them all broken out by weights. Of course you’ll notice a few things that just come with the territory of wrestling coverage. 1) Multiple guys from the same team at a weight. Ironman doesn’t allow that, so we’ll eventually see where they slot in. For now, I have them where I had them immediately following Super 32. 2) Guys at weights they won’t be competing in now that the season started. Basing rankings off a major event like Super 32 makes sense because we see hundreds of kids at one place against each other. However, once the season starts, we see movement. I expect that to be true here as well. So, with about 10 days to go, we’ll just have to deal with that the best we can. For the rest of the content leading up to next weekend, hopefully I can get even more accurate entries for the full preview. As for the weights, 150 leads the way with 14 out of 25. 144 comes next with 13. 106, 126, 144, 157, and 175 feature the top 2 in those weight classes. In the matter of 126, we have the top 4 in the same bracket, and 7 out of the top 10. When compared to Super 32 there are definitely weights that will prove tougher here. 126 is one. 144 is another one. 150 of course, assuming Duke is healthy now. With football season over for most, 285 also has many more from the top 10 here. And then 175 is easily the biggest jump in quality from Greensboro to Cuyahoga Falls. As mentioned, I’ll be back with a more in depth preview of the entire event. 2023 Gable Donnybrook Preview: Notable Wrestlers From Each School
![](https://tkdwnmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/donnybrook-1024x576.png)
2023 Gable Donnybrook Notable Wrestlers From Each School Before we get to Ironman, we get the annual Gable Donnybrook. One of the midwest’s toughest in-season tournaments brings in schools from Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin. Ranked Wrestlers Per School At Ironman We looked at some of the states heading to Ironman. The teams and then the ranked wrestlers in that group. Now, we’ll look at all the ranked wrestlers per school in the field. There are 124 total ranked wrestlers in this year’s field. Wyoming Seminary leads the way with 12. Rival Blair comes in 2nd with 8. As for public schools around the country, Edmond North out of Oklahoma has 5. Ranked Prep Wrestlers At Ironman I included Wyoming Seminary with the prep schools as well as with the earlier PA list of schools. The Blue Knights lead the way with 11 out of 14 in the rankings. Rival Blair comes in behind them with 8. These two will be in the team mix for sure. I still don’t know what Sem does at 157 and 165 but Crawford is good enough to be mentioned. A lot of favorites and possible finalists in this group. 2023 Clovis West Shootout Preview
![](https://tkdwnmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/clovis-west-shootout-1024x576.png)
Clovis West Shootout Clovis, CA. – The new season is upon us. Finally. And throughout the Golden State, wrestlers are set to get the party started. And we could see a great deal of early elite action at this weekend’s Clovis West Shootout. Buchanan High, also known as the Penn State of California, will be looking for their eighth straight team state title. The Bears return six state medalists and one more who finished in the blood rounds. However, this year might be the first in awhile that they face a real challenge to the throne. Poway and Gilroy come into the new season with higher national rankings. Although, this isn’t the first time, and we all know to be the king you gotta beat the kind. Good luck to them. Another team expected to challenge the Bears is their hometown rival Clovis High Cougars. Depending who they bring this weekend, they’ll have their own loaded team, composed of state placers and qualifiers. On paper we could get a nice early season team race at this tournament. But nothing is for sure as far as who actually competes. Additional teams who could challenge Buchanan and Clovis include Clovis West, Dinuba, and Vacaville High, one of the top schools in the Sac-Joaquin Section. It’s also possible Royal High is here as well and they’re a quality team from the Southern Section. Regardless, this is a good opening challenge to the season and we hope to catch some great CA wrestling at Clovis West. **** It is early in the season so many wrestlers that I wrote about in the article may or might not compete this weekend or could be at different weights **** The 106-weight class includes two top 10 kids in Blake Woodward (Buchanan) ranked #2 and Anthony Garza (Clovis) #9 in the state. Woodward was an All-American at the 2023 NHSCA Freshman nationals, while Garza went 3-2 at Super 32. Both should see each other a lot during the season as both kids compete in the same league and section. State finalist Rocklin Zinkin (Buchanan) should steer the pack in this weight class. With a second-place finish in California and a top-12 result at Super 32, Zinkin will likely have a target on his back with other wrestlers trying to get the upper hand. Thunder Lewis (Clovis) may be the potential opponent for Zinkin after having finished fourth at the CIF state tournament. Upperclassmen Anthony Castillo of Central will venture and ruin the Zinkin/Lewis matchup. Castillo was third in his section tournament and wrapped up the season top 12 in the state. Don’t sleep on Elijah Almarez of Vacaville High who was fourth at the Sac-Joaquin Section. Presuming C.J. Huerta (Buchanan) competes this weekend, he should be the top contender at 120 pounds. Huerta finished second last year in this event. He has a drive to claim a Shootout title for the first time in his already illustrious wrestling career. A wrestler who will be a headache for Huerta is Southern Section phenom Mason Carrillo of Royal. Up a weight class, Carrillo will try to put himself in the mix of wrestlers that could win a state title in March. Dinuba’s state qualifier Nicholas Quintana is the other wrestler in the field with state experience. Another wrestler with the surname Zinkin should press to win a Shootout title this weekend. With two state medals under his belt, Nikade Zinkin (Clovis) is an orthodox individual who rarely gets in trouble. Still undecided about where to compete in the next level, Zinkin will be a great catch for any college team. Two wrestlers from rival Buchanan High are set to compete in this weight class. They are Paris Ruiz and Ashton Besmer. Ruzi comes from great stock as his father (Paris) was a two-time place winner for Clovis West. Ruiz Jr.’s scholastic career includes wins over state placer winners Siraj Sidhu (Del Oro), Thunder Lewis (Clovis), and state champion Ronnie Ramirez (Walnut). Besmer is no slouch himself as he has had victories over great wrestlers like Jayden Wren (formerly of Clovis), state place winner Mason Carrillo (Royal), and Jason McDonald (Lemoore). Leo Maestas (Clovis West) will look to claim an individual title this weekend for the Golden Eagles at 132 pounds. Maestas is a two-time state qualifier and one of the leaders for the Golden Eagles. Let’s not forget about senior Eli Granada (Clovis). Despite not having the post-season he was expecting, he did have a great regular season that saw him place third at the Shootout and the Zinkin Classic. I am excited to see Anthony Harris back in the Buchanan High lineup. Back in 2022, Harris finished top 12 at the state tournament at 106 pounds. He is 1-1 against Granada as he defeated him 4-2 in the semifinals of the Shootout last year. Granda returned the favor by beating Harris 3-0 in the consolation semifinal round of the Zinkin Classic. Izaak Mendoza (Redwood) will be in the field this weekend. He was a state qualifier last year at 120 pounds. Gavin Bauder (Buchanan), formerly of Clovis North, is the highest-ranked wrestler at 138 pounds in the tournament. However, due to transfer rules he should be back in the second half of the season for the Bears. With him not on the field, the top competitor this weekend should be state qualifier Qusai Marini (Vacaville). Marini placed fifth at the Shootout and the Sac-Joaquin Section to punch his ticket to state. Caleb Rubio (Exeter) was a section qualifier last season, and his best tournament finish was sixth at the Sierra Nevada tournament. Keep an eye on freshman Wyatt Lewis (Clovis) who finished seventh at the prestigious Grappler Fall Classic Preseason tournament in Michigan. A pair of top-five wrestlers from California are programmed to compete this weekend at 144 pounds. Those wrestlers are 2023 state finalist Joseph Toscano (Buchanan) and two-time state place winner Thomas Thongseng (Exeter). Toscano was third at this event last season at 138 pounds, while Thonseng won the tournament at 152 pounds. Expect a barnburner of a match to occur if these two grapplers meet in the finals. Anthony Vargas (Central) is the other wrestler who competed at the state tournament. Keep an eye on James Wright (Clovis) and Sac-Joaquin Section place winner Aydan Ducharme (Vacaville) as the pair can do some damage this
PA Power The Surge Recap

PA Power The Surge Recap So, there wasn’t going to be a crazy amount of intrigue at every weight but there were some possible match ups that had national ranking implications as well as another chance to catch Bo Bassett in action and what’s not to like about that? National Matches 114: Dom Deputy over Matt O’Neill (6-4) Last time out, O’Neill got the win. This time it was Deputy. O’Neill is one of the top middle schoolers in the country so the win is a good one for Deputy but he just maintains his spot. 121: Nico Fanella over Weston Pisarchick (maj. dec. 10-0) Fanella is one of the “first ones out” of the top 25 so his performance keeps him right on that edge. 133: Bo Bassett over Tahir Parkins (fall; 3:06) This was a national top 10 match up. Parkings won’t fall, just notable for how dominant Bassett continues to be. 139: Mason Gibson over Mason Wagner (3-2) I think Bo and Mason will flip weights eventually. For now, I’ll have them where they are. Wagner was a tough finalist for his first event back but nice to close out the day with the win. 145: Pierson Manville over Jack Consiglio (maj. dec. 11-0) Consiglio wasn;t able to capitalize on any momentum from beating Miller the round before. Manville survived a scare in the quarterfinals but bounced back in dominant fashion. 145: Jack Consiglio over Melvin Miller (3-2) This was one of the more highly anticipated matches of the weekend. Solid pperclassman vs scorching hot freshman. It would be the veteran Consiglio getting it done here. 145: Shane Wagner over Melvin Miller (5-3) I think Miller’s performance is to be expected from a younger kid, especially at a more developed weight. He can win Super 32 and finish 5th at The Surge. He can come back and win Ironman and then who knows. Manville, Consiglio, and Miller will all be in Ohio in December. Plus Jax Joy and a host of others. 160: Asher Cunningham over Cael Weidemoyer (11-6) This one here was probably the most influential on the rankings. At the next update, barring some other notable results, this will be reflected.
